THE WHOLE IDEA OF MAKING SLUMDOG MILLIONAIREWITH OR WITHOUT THE WALL STREET CRASH WAS:
The capitalist system works as far as creation of personal wealth is concerned. The whole movie is an exercise in celebrationof good old but false truth, namley: In dog eat dog capitalistic system hard work pays & can pay.
The movie sets before the doubting Indian middle-class (is there any doubting middle-class Thomas left?!) the example of Dharavi dogs & shouts to us: THE SLUMDOGS HAVE MADE IT. SEE THE SYSTEM WORKS BEAUTIFULLY. DON'T BE SENTIMENTAL ABOUT THE POOR!
So, Slumdog Millionaire is not a movie about poverty, Dharavi or "shining" (?!)India in the capitalistic system but the story of America; the West & the superiority of the capitalist system. IT IS A LIE.
Was ever India's poverty a CLASSIFIED INFORMATION?
SO, DON'T SEE THE MOVIE. There are better movies to spend your weekend in a splendid way. The choice is yours entirely.
*This is not a film. Just as any written word goesn't make a literature so anything shot on a camera doesn't make a movie. IT CAN PASS OFF AS a filmed docu drama of real life in a Mumabi slum & I guess middle class Indians needed a drama after so many 'saas bahu' serials on TV.
Aint it plain stupid that time & again the West does a magnificient CUCKOLDING JOB ON US. READ ON! I am so excited as the rest of India, nay world at Slumdog Millionaire's roaring success at the Oscars that I am paralysed. I dunno what to write.
In Chandigarh the majority of slum dwellers who I interviewed have no inkling about the movie Slumdog Millionaire. All I talked to said: "we don't have the time to watch movies."
I stepped into India's leading shop MUSIC WORLD & asked the salesman how many music CDs & DVD's of the movie they had sold. The salesman's response was: "It is confidential." I persisted. He answered: "Around 15."
I could see that the people at the music shop were not exactly lining to buy Slumdog Millionaire. I assume this to be the case in all cities, towns & villages & of course in all-India slums outside Mumbai.
My hunch is as good as yours is as good as their's. The life with capital L for the HAVE-NOTS will go on as it has gone on for the last 5 Hindu millennia.
Or am I mistaken?
Yes. I AM IN A DENIAL MODE WHILE THE GUNG HO OF THE WORLD (THEY ARE UNITED AS THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT THE LAST REMNANTS OF SHAME!) ARE AT WORK TO BUILD A HAPPY SEMI-CAPITALISTIC HEAVEN IN INDIA.
Dharavi, as it was the case in Mao's China & in Stalin's Russia (for the uninitiated let me tell you that in these two countries there used to be model villages {called village communes} which showcased FOR THE SCEPTICAL WESTERNERS the "supposed" OR REAL success of the socialist agriculture & industry, would be MODEL SLUM which will showcase THE SUCCESS OF MODERN INDIA. POSSIBLY!
& what is the truth about Dharavi? & the thousands of other slums blooming like festering wounds all over India?
Just as in Mao's China & Stalin's Russia outsiders' endorsement was needed to underline the success of socialism so in India it needed AMERICA & ENGLAND, nay Britain, (how ironic!).
But as in Soviet Union's & China's case in India's case also talking of Slumdog Millionaire & the consequent endorsement for INDIA INC. & the WORLD CAPITALIST SYSTEM THE TRUTH HAS BEEN TURNED ON ITS HEAD. One would have hoped especially after the recent economic meltdown that THE SOCIALIST THEORY would again find a legitimate place if not at the Wall Street then atleast in the theoretical economic discourse. But no.
Slumdog Millionaire didn't anticipate WALL STREET DEBACLE but atleast at hindsight one can say surely that ITS 8 OSCARS were a foregone conclusion given the fact that AMERICA HAD TO ENSURE THAT THE ITS "NEAR BACKYARD" (iNDIA ET AL) WAS INSURED FOR TIMES TO COME FROM ANY SOCIALIST UPHEAVALS. 8 OSCARS in an act of FARTHEST short-nearsightedness try to drum into the minds of SLUMDOGS/MIDDLE CLASS INDIANS that CAPITALIST SYSTEM WORKS. ONE JUST HAS TO SLOG & SWEAT. IT IS EQUITABLE BECAUSE IT IS A FAIR LOTTERY.
Thus, the capitalistic game is not only much fairer than the socialistic ideal but also much exciting. SO GO CAPITALISTIC!
& plus of course the fact that CAPITALISTIC SYSTEM KISSI KO BHI DHO DAL SAKTA HAI MAGAR WITH THE DIFFERENCE JOR KA DHAKA DHEERE SE LAGE WHICH IS NOT THE CASE WITH COMMUNISM.
So, if a few hundred or a few hundred thousand or if a million or so (of course over a period of time) people die of starvation, poverty, disease AS A CONSEQUENCE OF FAIR DEAL & EQUITABLE & CAPITALISTICALLY HUMANE CAPITALIST SYSTEM to itna burra nahi lagta (dheere ka jhatka pata nahi lagta na) but of course some handful of 1000 FILTHY RICH & CRUEL LANDLORDS & BUSINESS BARONS who were executed or left in the Soviet gulags WAS & IS INHUMANE. AACHA NAHI LAGTA NA.
So, jhatka is both the meeting point between socialism & capitalism & their point of departure.
Blah, blah , blah!Slumdog story is great. In one simple line - rags to riches story.
Haan kyon ki yeh CAPITALISTIC LOTTERY hai, isi liye sabhi to RICH nahi ho sakte, magar MORAL OF THE STORY IS: MUNNA BHAI LAGE RAHO.& DHARAVI has already become a MODEL SLUM atleast in FILMY STYLE, so NETAJI in real life don't forget to turn & MARKET DHARAVI AS INDIA'S MODEL SLUM....
Dharavi wala ke liye bhai PET KA SAWAL HAI aur netaji aur unke chelo ke liye PROMOTION KA... haan usi ki bhai...
