'Sir'- Reminding you of the days when you watched this movie? Among all these experimental, erotic and ghost movies churning out from this film industry, sometimes, it feels good to watch some predictable Hindi movies with similar faces like Avtar Gill, Mushtaque Khan and Soni Razdan ...

Ever thought of the role of the teacher in society?

How many of us would have been what we are today without the help of these teachers? Are teachers gaining the same respect they deserve like in the past? Teachers sometimes serve as the first role-model to the eyes of the innocent child whose world is rather small. The realistic side can be something different. Are teachers really giving the right education? Is the teacher well-educated him/herself? You will be amazed to know how many teachers are not doing their jobs rightly. A big thank you to all those teachers- around the world - who are working to provide the right education without any bias towards race, colour, caste, the wealthy and the poor.

The role of the teacher as seen through the eyes of Mahesh Bhatt

If there is a theme in this guy’s mind, you are sure that he has watched a Hollywood movie the day before! He will then come the next day with now ‘his’ new theme in mind. Inspiration, plagiarism or copying ideas: whatever you want to call it these days, ‘Sir’ is an adaptation from ‘The Principal’. Anyway, good effort to direct a movie in a Bollywood way!

Is there a story?

- Interesting question when it comes to Bollywood movies…

The theme is based on ‘Sir’- the teacher, but the movie is about violence, vengeance, greed, college romance and good music. Pooja Bhatt is the daughter of Paresh Rawal and she falls in love with Atul Agnihotri. Gulshan Glover and Paresh Rawal are enemies. Gulshan tries to kill Pooja but Naseeruddin Shah intervenes and try to make both parties settle. He is the teacher as everyone would know. Can we call this a story? Not when this story has been recycled nth number of times in the 80’s.

ACTING

  • ‘Should all of them be called actors?’…

Naseeruddin Shah as ‘Sir’

A mature actor taking the role of a different ‘Sir’ with a view to resolves issues between two gang leaders. Shot in 1992-93, Naseer expressed himself as someone who wore the clothes of a real teacher, talked like a responsible civilian and a protector of peace. His angry side, his emotional dilemma and the bravery he has showed, is a plus point for the movie. Actors like him who act with passion are rare. Are there any these days?

Paresh Rawal

He is one of the bad guys who turned out to become good after the second half of the movie… Yes, I know it’s confusing but this is when that you know that it’s a typical masala element in Bollywood. He’s like these gang leaders who shows both sides of them in the movie; his love for her only daughter –Pooja Bhatt- and his desire to kill Gulshan Glover. He shows strong acting skills with real expressions both as the father and the gang leader.

Gulshan Glover

Typical Gulshan style! Special facial features: some red pimples all over the face! He has a mad daughter and has some weird people in his company. He shows that a baddie will remain a scoundrel and will betray all trust imposed on. He has a different way to deliver his dialogues and always a pleasure to watch him even in negative roles.

Pooja Bhatt

Stubborn and she starts a singing spree in the second half…when in the first half, she didn’t even know and didn’t even want to sing. What a spectacular shift in personality! She doesn’t act or she can’t act. She knows…

Atul Agnihotri

He is shy, rides his bicycle to meet Pooja and sings in front of her window to express his love with his hands on his heart…most of the time. There was no acting involved for him. He was lucky not to act! Sometimes, I ask myself, was he in the movie?

Music

One of the most original works by Anu Malik except for ‘Sun Sun Sun Barsaat Ki Dhun Sun’ which is a direct lift from an international hit in the 70’s. ‘Yeh Ujli Chandni Jab’ is a masterpiece in many terms; the mood, the depth in the singing and his romantic music. ‘Humse Badal Gaya Woh’ is another one of my favourites with a catchy opening and a semi-classical rhythm. Best songs given to Kumar Sanu during 1993. I can write a whole review here!

What did I learn after watching this movie?

  • Mahesh Bhatt has ideas but crappy ones.

  • Mahesh Bhatt cannot make a happy ending without killing the main character’s family during his mad movie making in the 90s- children, wives and everyone connected should die!

  • Gulshan Glover is born to do such Dracula-Demonist type roles.

  • Pooja Bhatt kisses many times in many scenes, even when not required by the script!

  • Atul is a dumb.

  • Anu Malik showed that he can produce beautiful melodies and he has the capacity to do so, even now. Anu: bring back these kinds of melodies!

Is it worth watching?

Yes! Although the basic of story is an old apple in a state of decomposition, the inclusion of a teacher, two lovers, two weird characters as gang leaders build a story which captures attention. We all know somehow the outcome but Mahesh Bhatt has thrown some excellent songs with meanings and Naseer in a strong role which never disappoints in the movie. Jai Dixit, the writer, adapted the story in the usual Bollywood manner and tries to use the role of the teacher to promote peace, avoid violence and breed true love…
