Well, the first thing I will inform my readers is that this was my first visit on an international airlines. I have no previous experiences to refer to. So, this is a first experience kind of thing.

In a way it was nice as there is no previous baggage. After weeks of anticipation, I got ready for my first international flight from Kolkata to Kuala Lumpur with a change at Singapore. I was slightly nervous as this was to be the longest I had been on a plane. Being enclosed in a plane for five hours was making me feel a bit queasy.

Compounding the problem was warning about jet lag and that we would be flying in the night. I was afraid that things could turn out to be preety boring as there could be nothing to do except read flight magazines which in Jet is calculated to put to sleep even followers of Maths weekly! Coupled with all this was the high expectations I had of the plane and its crew. Everything was going as anticipated.

Boarding was on time. I was getting hungry as I had skipped dinner. The funnily clad airhostesses escorted us in with mumbled greetings. Let me warn you if you are after preety air hostesses you are on the wrong track here. If you ask me they recruit their crew by checking if the ladies can get into their figure hugging dress.

The drawback of such a policy is that the face is neglected. Anyway, in this equal opportunity age it is not safe to linger too much on this. Every arrangement was done very efficiently and difference with the domestic air lines could be seen. The seats were quite spacious and come with enough gizmos to keep a first fight guy excited. The leg room is cramped and thoughts featuring DVT deaths are terrifying. After you are seated and get to see the much advertised in flight entertainment console. It is really worth the hype. You can watch over 60 movies in too many languages including HIndi. There are lots of songs you can hum to. There are even a few television serials (Yes, there were a few of FRIENDS).

For those not fond of the idiot box, there was the amazing channel where one could see the current flight position and location. This I can assure you is very amazing and the altitude is truly awesome. I had the suspicion that this was a video which had no relation to our current position after all the sky is blue every where. But, I was informed that it was real time. Finally, there were enough games to keep the sizeable contigent of kids squealing with delight for the entire duration of the flight.

Any thoughts of sleep quickly disappeared from the kids mind much to the distress of a sizeable number of people. As for me, I could not find much interest in them, preety basic most of them (except chess). The captain in some obscure dialect (Odd are that it was English) greeted us all and told us, presumably something about the destination. Then the cabin crew took over and in some fancy form of Malayan English told us the usual precautions. Also, the menus were served.

Now dont run away with some idea of a thick book with lots of options. There was only two options Indian and continental. I had the Indian and it was quite good. The juice was actually fresh and the wine of good stock. The air hostesses were efficient and friendly. They dispensed the healing liquid with a friendly smile. The coffee was bitter enough to rival any good health juice. So, to cut to the matter, dinner was good.

There was a remote /phone / Credit card read that was built into every seat. Headphones of a very good quality were given and I settled into a leisurely perusal of the fare on hand. The LCD screen can be adjusted but due to limitations can be viewed meaningfully only from particular angles. We had good weather through out the duration and there was no turbulence.

The cabin crew responded fast to requests and pleasantly. Transit passengers were told of the drill to be followed and we made a smooth descent into Singapore. The whole experience was very nice. I will recommend anyone to fly with SA, particularly if they are with their families.

With reduction in prices it is much better to start your journey with such professionals and make the perfect start to your holiday.
