On the surface, Shrek is a funny movie and an example of some amazing computer animation. But there's more going on with this movie than what's on the surface. The writers of this movie seem to have a lot to say about a lot of things, and it's all brought out in a very satirical way through the humor in this film. Just about every funny scene can be taken in two or three different ways. A lot of it is pretty subtle, but the filmmakers just about clobber you over the head with the anti-Disney stuff (not a big problem for me, since I'm not a big Disney fan, but watch out all you mouse-lovers!).
The vocal performances by the actors (Myers, Diaz, Murphy, and Lithgow), are great, and very appropriate for their characters. It took me awhile, however, to get used to Shrek's Scottish accent (Myers) -- I kept expecting him to break into a rendition of, ''I want my baby-back, baby-back, baby-back....'' (Fat geek in Austin Powers II.)
Since the movie is a send-up of the fairy tales that most of us have grown up with, I found the plot to be just a bit predictable, although they do manage one or two nice twists along the way. Near the end of the movie I found myself starting to get a little squirmy in my seat and checking my watch, usually a sign that the film has lost some of my interest and gone on a little too long. This might be the part of the film that is most tailored to children, since it involves a lot of song, dance, and feel good stuff.
Watch this movie with your kids.
