First of all, I would like to clarify that this review is not about the old Shoprite, but the new name that has taken its place, "Food Right". It is owned by the Future Group, if I am not mistaken.
We purchased two bedsheet sets which were advertised as "BUY 2 @ Rs 1000/-". This would imply that we had to pay 1000/- if we bought two.
We also bought some special offers: Imported pasta which is normally priced at Rs 175/- was advertised as Rs 100/-, imported apricot conserve(MRP 139/-) selling at 100/-, and Tasty Treat brand tomato ketchup refill packs(plastic packs with spouts) MRP 55/- selling at 50/-.
The check-out guy was so fast that I could not check each item as he was swiping it. However, I remember asking him if the two bedsheets were indeed at Rs 1000/-. He said Yes.
The bill was higher than my usual, but I thought it must be because of the bedsheets and other stuff we had purchased. Anyway, we were browsing through other shops when I casually checked through the bill. That's when I got a big shock! I had been charged Rs 1000/- each for the bedsheets!
So we went back to Food Right and met the guy at the Information Desk. He was quite cool. He checked the slip and told me to get the stuff and show him. I went back to my car and brought the sheets and some other stuff I thought might have been overcharged.
He checked the sheets and said that the bar-code numbers of the two bedsheets I had picked up were not the same, therefore this error. I told him I had picked up the bedsheets from the same pile where the offer was posted, and they were of the same manufacturer. I also showed him the overcharging on the pasta, and the tomato ketchup. I forgot to get the apricot conserve, though.
So, after some initial consultation among their friends and colleagues, they made me sign a slip and returned Rs 85/-. After some more waiting, they returned Rs 1000/- to me along with a new charge slip(cash memo) and the same two bedsheets I had picked up! This was odd as I thought the bar-code numbers would be different and they would go and change one of the sheets, but they did not do that!
As I had forgotten to mention the apricot conserve, I lost Rs 39/- which I would have got back as refund!
SO, THE LESSON LEARNT IS: IF YOU DON'T KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN, YOU WILL BE CHEATED HERE! IF YOU WANT TO SHOP HERE, PLEASE CHECK YOUR CASH MEMO CLOSELY BEFORE PAYING!
The Future Group's boss has written a book called "It Happened in India". I would like to add to it a postscript, "This sort of Cheating CAN HAPPEN ONLY IN INDIA"!
