Shivanasamudra Waterfalls – Sea Of Shiva

There are many beautiful places near Bangalore that are tranquil, unique, and all natural. One such wonderful place is the Shivanasamudra Waterfalls, literally meaning Shiva's Sea, it is situated at Mandaya district, at distance of around 120 kms from Bangalore & 85 kms from Mysore.Originally called Heggur, also known as Shivanasamudra ( sea of Shiva) because of the volume of water.

Shivanasamudra waterfalls are known for the first hydroelectric power station of Asia that was built in 1902. This station was commissioned by the Diwan of Mysore, Sir K. Seshadri Iyer. This is one of the oldest power generating stations in India. The electricity produced here was initially used in the Kolar Gold Fields. Thus, Kolar Gold Fields became the first town in Asia to get hydro electricity. The Waterfalls divides into Barachukki Falls and Gaganchukki Falls, which fall from an elevation of 200 feet and merge into the Cauvery River. These waterfalls are considered to be the second largest in the country and are considered amongst the top 100 waterfalls across the world. The sight of these twin falls is very beautiful and the best time to visit them is during the monsoon.

Activities.

Trekking, one can explore the beautiful mountains & thick forests. Coracle rides, climbing, camping, fishing can be done in the Cauvery River, but one has to bring own fishing gear.

Advice.

It is not safe to climb a waterfall without proper climbing gear and training. Be Aware of Slippery Surfaces, the common mishap at waterfalls is slipping on wet or algae-covered rocks. Even dry rocks can be slippery. Don’t Climb on Waterfalls; it is not safe to climb a waterfall without proper climbing gear and training.Stay Out of stream currents, never cross a stream anywhere near the top of a waterfall. One can take a dip in the refreshing cool & sweet waters at the Water Fall. However diving is dangerous, as the bottom could be rocky with unpredictable depths. There are no good restaurants in the vicinity. It is better to bring own food.

What to Bring.

In order to ensure a safe & successful trip, here are a few useful things you might want to consider packing for your trip in addition to your basic toiletries and clothes.   Nearby Places of Interest.

There is a Ranganatha temple nearby which has an 8 feet statue of Lord Vishnu, This ancient temple of the Hoysala period is situated on the Madhya-Ranga Island, very near to the waterfalls. The temple doors are likely to be closed around 5 pm, plan your trip to reach here early.
