with this first review of mine on film actors, I may just be able to satify all sorts of readers - those who like shah rukh khan { as they would love to read his praise ] and those who do not like shah rukh khan [ as they would think "what does this fool like about that SRK ? ]. So here I go with a continually uprising morale.
to be very honest, indian cinema is all about entertainment [ atleast most of the audience thinks so ] so its quite hard to imagine an actor, or actually a FILM STAR getting acclaimed all over without having the most perfect balance of prowess, charisma and commercial success.
shah rukh khan has been one such personality who genuinely has the "X-factor" which does the trick for him. he doesnt have the conventional good looks, but has been gifted an amazing screen presence. he has been the quintessence of how to play to the audience.
he often has been accused of being autonomous, hamming, ocer-acting and all the stuff but thats what is demanded by most of our entertainment straved viewers. so whats wrong if that shah rukh does what he is the best at ?
dont get me wrong. I m not trying to defend shah rukh from all his mediocre work. burt after all, every actor longs for enormous popularity, huge money and box office throne. and shah rukh knows how to have it.
i personnally believe there are just three factors that can be considered by an actor in "BOLLYWOOD" to choose a particular movie :-
CREATIVE SATISFACTION
COMMERCIAL SUCCESS
MUTUAL RELATIONS
now just come with me down to memary lane assessing the film career of shah rukh khan by these three Yardsticks n evaluate where has he gone wrong......
DEEWANA-SRK had sensed the impact of this fanatic lover on the masses.
CHAMATKAR-a silly caper that surprisingly clicked at the B-O.
RAJU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN-how could shah rukh refuse his mentor AZIZ MIRZA ? and besides, the film was genuinely refreshing.
DIL AASHNA HAI-how many have the guts to say no to hema malini ? [ the film was really third-rate ]
MAYA MEMSAAB-unfortunately this subtle masterpiece failed to intrigue the audience.
BAAZIGAR-a stupid refusal by salman to this role set the balls rolling for shah rukh khan as he just shone [ and also took away the filmfare sward ] as the revengeful AJAY SHARMA in this run away hit by abbas-mustan.
DARR-cant imagine how aamir would have done this role but shah rukh is still known [ and humiliated too ] for his "I LOVE U KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKIRAN !!!!!!!"
KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA-i thank my stars that this idea struck kundan shah just when SRK was rising well. his best performance ever.
ANJAAM-he just liked to continue in the negative genre and there came another filmfare award for him.
KARAN ARJUN-shah rukh knew the reincarantion formula would work [ esp with rakesh roshan wielding the megaphone ] and he would steal the scenes [ though salman was slightly better ]
JAMANA DEEWANA-no would have imagined ramesh sippy would fail so badly with shah rukh at his boom time.
TRIMURTI-again, trimurti's fall was a huge eye-opener with the team of SUBASH GHAI, MUKUL ANAND n such a huge star cast.
RAM JAANE-the character was over the top and so was shah rukh khan's acting [ although it fetched him a screen award ]
GUDDU-this was one of the most awful movies of SRK and deserved all the ill-fate at the box office.
DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE-do I need to justify here ? the biggest hit in the history of indian films ever [ believe it or faint, it earned 800 crores in all ]
ENGLISH BABU DESI MEM-only god n SRK would know why he did chose such a rubbish stuff. { AND THE SAME LINES FIT FOR KING UNCLE]
OH DARLING YEH HAI INDIA-this outrageous action comedy connected to no one.
CHAHAT-his first collaboration with the MAHESH BHATT didnt work out as the audience found it a bit too loud and garish for their liking.
ARMY-shah rukh inspite of a minor role was wrongly pulicised n the audience felt betrayed.
PARDES-he stole the show as the reticent ARJUN SAAGAR in this properly executed flick which also wa a huge rage overseas.
KOYLA-it just felt A repetitive plot and handling from rakesh roshan as the expectations came crashing down.
YES BOSS-SRK is just perfect at playing a middle class likeable guy and YES BOSS proved it.
DIL TO PAGAL HAI-YASH CHOPRA used the same elements as DDLJ in etching SRK's scharacter n it worked.
DUPLICATE-mind u, the film got SRK a few nominations for the negative side here. a damp-squib otherwise.
DIL SE-who wont like to have MANI RATNAM's name on one's CV ? and the film wasnt bad at all. [ though the collection say so ]
KKHH-this assured SRK he didnt need to do anything different as he came out triumphs every time he played a youthful lover boy.
BAADSHAH-the film got average collections and that too b'coz it had shah rukh.
PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUTANI-an unexpectedly bad starter for SRK'S production house.
HEY RAM-it was a commitment to KAMAL HAASAN of working with him and so he did.
JOSH-he brought a new dimension to the street rowdy roles altogether. a great performance.
MOHABBATEIN-this sophisticated look besotted even the most disconcerting girls [ and also got him ANOTHER filmfare award ]
GAJGAMINI-just a guest apperance [ fortunately ]
ONE 2 KA 4-a good commercial film and SRK was literally "BACK TO ACTION"
ASOKA-he was just brilliant in this author-backed role [ though the film flopped ]
K3G-one Cant think of a KJ film without SRK [ as KJ himself said ]. a huge hit allover.
DEVDAS-mr. bhansali brought the gloomy side of SRK as it romped home with all the awards.
HUM TUMHARE HAIN SANAM-he did this role of a suspecting husband quite well.
SHAKTI-a great change for SRK [ thought just a special apperance ]
CHALTE CHALTE-the magis of AZIZ MIRZA-SHAH RUKH KHAN simplicty can never die, can it ?
KAL HO NA HO-a great performance as a helpless lover boy and expectedly a massive success at the B-O.
WOH LAMHE JUDAAI KE-just a victim of gross misuse of huge names n late release.
MAIN HOON NA-SRK won all the hearts in this so claimed "A FILM THAT HAS EVERYTHING".
VEER ZAARA-yash chopra's comeback venture guaranteeing a great initial was enough reason for SRK. an average film otherwise.
SWADES-after eons, we saw a authentic SRK character and a mature performance from SRK. A HEART WARMING FLM.
PAHELI-WASNT IT A GREAT FUN for u to see SRK as a ghost lover n that too with a moustache ?
KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA-a real character, a genuine perfromance.
and people say he is repetitive n overacts. what a joke !
to hell with critics, as long as SRK has a great screen persona and does what he is best at, he has our vote.
