The famous “Sid-Trisha” are back after a hiatus of about 7 plus years…and understandably so!After all, they were supposed to get  married and intial years of marriage always ask for a hiatus!

Lets meet the then Boyfriend-girlfriend couple, who are happily married(are they!) now and see how this couple fared.

Story:

The movie has a promising beginning with Sid(Farhan) and Trisha(Vidya) meeting at a club and then going to a hotel. They behave as if they are not married and this leaves the hotel’s manager and the audience confused for a brief period. The unprotected “under the sheets romp” results in a baby girl and then the not -so -dreamy reality strikes hard .They argue, blame each other and try to cope with the sleepless nights and baby diaper changing schedule with difficulty.Enter Ram Kapoor, brother- in- law of Trisha, who suggests  Sid that the foundation of a successful marriage is not trust/love but  small lies(and the audience, specially all the married couples applaud!).There is a small respite and Farhan finds himself in a happy space. The guilt of not spending enough time with his family seeps in(after a brief conversation with Vir Dass) and the movie takes the usual happy ending turn.

This movie shows all married couples in  bad light. The post marriage issues are treated neither jokingly nor realistically. It tries to scare you off your plans to extend the family, as if its promoting the “Family planning campaigns” by Indian government.

In the introductory scene, the husbands are introduced as “sad” and wives as “frustrated”.?I mean, seriously?

Direction:

Saket choudhary, the director of surprise hit pyar k side effects is back with another  surprise, but a blunder this time! The scenes and  dialogues are quiet predictable and at times seems like a copy from whatsapp/forwarded sms jokes on husbands and wives. No freshness and no intelligence is depicted in the movie’s so called punch-lines. “A wife can live without husband but not a maid”, ”I felt like sehwag, jisne acha perform nahi kiya to use replace kar diya”, ”main chahti hun ki tum chaho ki tum na jao friends se milne”, ”kisi ki bhi galti ho sorry husband bolega”.Where is the director’s imagination and creativity?

Why will anybody  spend their  hard-earned bucks watching the video version of the sms jokes?

First half is tolerable, thanks to few hilarious scenes like the portion in which Farhan is  trying to understand pregnant Vidya’s situation by tying a water balloon to his stomach was really good and kept you rolling for minutes or the scene in which Farhan “tries” to act as a responsible father covering the baby when she is feeling hot, removing the blanket when she is feeling cold etc etc.

The second half is a head ache. You restlessly wait for the movie to finish. You also wish for an interesting twist, a turn of events that will keep you glued. But unfortunately that never arrives. What arrives is a second baby!Where is the 1-0/1-1 and then the counter rising upto 100(as the first tear drops) kind of master -stroke scene in this flick?Where is the Pyar k side effects magic?

Star cast:

Farhan-He is back after the serious and award winning performance in Bhag Milkha Bhag.A submissive and gullible husband, in fact a “sataya hua pati”.He looks innocent and the way he advises the hotel manager(biwi ki galti ho to tum sorry bolo, apni galti ho to tum sorry bolo), is very relatable and real.He is the sole factor why this movie keeps you hoping for it to work somehow. He is a great actor, undoubtedly, lost in a hopeless movie.

The scene which irked me the most was Farhan takes the baby for a walk and forgets about her! Thanks to the soccer match.I mean, no father can be so heartless and insouciant to his own kid, howsoever ‘desperate for a break” he may be.

Vidya-There are traces of the petulant wife from Ghanchakkar still lingering in her.The way she says “hatooo” is very wife-like with an undertone of annoyance to it.Its a red alert tone which most of the married couples would easily relate to!She dazzled in the last scene(working on a laptop one moment, innocently excusing for her absence and unabashedly enjoying few moments of her freedom the very next second). She is another great actress, trying her best to sail this movie through rough script and direction to a successful shore. She fails in doing so, not because she faultered, but because the movie director and script failed her miserably.

Ram Kapoor-He is hilarious with his tips and successful shadi mantras in the first half. But in the second half, he comes across as a self-centered, cheating husband who is covering up for all the wrong doings under the name of his care for his family.

Vir Dass-A minuscule role, a Panchmola ad.Poor guy, given a role reminiscent of  Ranveer shorey’s  in Pyar ke side effects. He keeps on repeating Panchmola or “yo bro”.What a loss.

Music:

Pritam has given us some really good albums in the past(Love aj kal, Barfi, Ye jawani to name a few).

This movie’s soundtrack has few good tracks.Few tracks are in complete influence of the “Barfi” magic. There is a familiarity in the tracks, as if you have heard similar tracks earlier somewhere else!

“I’m sorry tumse pyaar ho gaya” is reminiscent of  “aashiyan” song from Barfi.similar soundtrack and same voice/way of singing.(Nikhil Paul george’s voice and Swanand kirkire’s lyrics .Same magical combination).Bawla sa sapna by Mohit Chauhan is a sweet, melodious song which can be used as a lullaby for kids?.it may take you to ur childhood days as well.:)Desi Romance is also a foot tapping number.”Tauba main shadi kar k pachtaya” is a realistic track, which can be played in “shadis”(pun intended!).

But there is no master track like “jane kya chahe man” from its prequel.

An average album which you would listen to  for a month or two and then forget about it unknowingly.

Verdict:

The drama is ho-hum, and the second half is super uninteresting compared to the pre-intermission fun.

Go for it only if you want to watch an insipid and boring version of ‘Pyar ka Punchnama”

2 stars for this disappointment.
