Tim Thomas ( Will Smith ) did. A regular guy with a beautiful wife, a beautiful home and a job he loves... a dream life if you may. Then one day he answers his cell phone while driving along with his wife that ultimately leads to his losing control of the car and results in the death of 7 innocent people including that of his wife. A guilt ridden , depressed man , Tim then sets out with his brother Ben thomas' s ( micheal ealy ) stolen identity and ID card of that of an IRS officer and chooses 7 ill fated people... who are dying or seriously sick but can and should recieve a second chance but hasnt caught a break yet. To these 7 he will provide a gift.... a gift of life.
The movie starts with Tim making a 911 call stating a suicide. When asked who is the victim , he states " I am " . From here we are taken on a flash back where we see Tim scout, track and interact with random people he has selected to see if they are worthy of his gifts. The 7 includes - a blind pianist who works at a call centre ( woody harrelson ) , a young woman with congenital heart problem ( rosario Dawson ) , an abused latina housewife , a child who needs bone marrow transplant to survive , an aged man who needs a kidney transplant , a woman who needs liver transplant and his own brother Ben who needs lung transplants.
Tim sets out to see if they are worthy of his gifts... if they are indeed good people... Will Smith has brought such a string credibility to the role that I cant see anyone else do it. His raw emotions and inner conflicts takes a dramatic potrayal on screen to what I can confidently call as his BEST PERFORMANCE to date. Rosario dawson is simply amazing and was a revelation to me. Woody and the rest of the cast shines in their respective performances. People I urge you to atch this movie as it aroused in me an emotion I cant quiet put into words. Granted reading the storyline hasnt made u exactly thrilled but it is indeed a profound experience trust me.
Of my 54 reviews , none has been written with the seriousness and passion as this one. Every scene in the movie tells a tale be it Tim's repulsion and sorrow at himself for verbally abusing woody to test his anger or the simple love making scene between Tim and Rosario to whom he falls in love ( nothing is exposed. Its a PG 13 movie ) where in I finally saw on screen a pure simple act which was truly an expression their love which they couldnt verbally explain. Ther is something so tender and humane here that it touches you.
Technically the movie didnt make me shed tears though its been touted as a serious tear jerker , ut it did put me in a somber mood. Will Smith has patched up with director Gabrielle Muccino once again after their previous venture - the pursuit of happiness to bring you this fantastic movie. AT the end I would give you this advice..... do not try to over analyse the movie... watch it for what it is amd let it unfold. It is more meaningful than the rest of the movies I have seen this year ( I may be forget ful due to the impact of the movie ) I have mentioned the story line only because it isnt a suspense movie and also because its very vague initially and you may lose interest. So go ahead and watch and please give me your thoughts.
