+++Movie Review of Se7en+++. Review on Seven Movie

People often say Brad Pitt is more of a "good looking star" and just an average actor. Ya hes good looking for sure, but you cannot deny that whatever role he  plays he tries to do justice and has, almost, always has succeeded in it. Sometimes his style takes over his performances(I felt that way while watching Troy).

My personal opinion is hes one of the most versatile actors of his generation.Hees given us artistic Babel, Curious case of Benjamin button on one hand and on the other also highly commercial entertainers like the Ocean's series, Mr and Mrs. Smith as well.

And if he is teaming with his favourite director David Fincher. Expect fireworks and mindblowing cinema. Be it FightClub or the recently released Curious case, these are shining examples of good cinema.

Moving on to Se7en

Note:-  For the convenience of people who do not know much about the film, I will try not to reveal as much as possible of the plot , even some characters. Most of you might know who stars in this film and may not find it so thrilling. I did not know more details about the film and it proved to be thrilling experience for me to watch Se7en.

Se7en (its Seven stylized as Se7en) is the first movie from Fincher-Pitt combination.

The story is that of two detectives - Willliam Sommerset(Morgan Freeman) and Mills(Pitt), in search of a Serial Killer who bases his killings on the seven deadly sins - Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Sloth, Pride, envy and finally Wrath. All his victims symbolize one of these sins.

As the detectives work on the case they realize that the killer is psycopath, but intelligent and moreover an artist, who thinks he will set an example once he completes his masterpiece of seven killings.The killer turns out to be more intelligent and is always a step ahead of the two. He leaves clues with every killing. He completes first five killings and is yet to go for the last 2.

At this point the movie does a complete turn, there is a huge twist. Mind you, the killer is not revealed till this time. And when he is revealed you are sure to be blown away.(I wont mention the actor who plays the role of the killer and for people who have not read/known much about the movie or do not know who plays the role I would request keep it that way. You will definitely enjoy the film much more if you dont know who stars as the villain, untill he comes on screen.)

So what are his last two killings, what do they symbolize and more importantly who are his victims..To know more watch Se7en.

The movie catches your attention from the word GO!!.

Se7en is  thrilling,  intelligent and a brilliant piece of cinema. However the mood the film is very grim and very dark. Its not your regular who dunnit or serial killer movie. Its definitely more than that.

The characterizations, the treatment of the story, the dialogues and above all the performances from all the lead actors take Se7en much higher than the regular hollywood flicks.

Performances - Freeman as the cop nearing his retirement does a brilliant job as usual. Hes excellent as usual. Pitt as the young, headstrong cop does a commendable work. One of his best performances. But the "Performance of the movie" and one of the most chilling negative acts comes from the guy who plays the killer. In fact, the character comes to the screen(clearly) only in the last few reels. But once he is in, he completely steals the show. He overshadows Pitt and Freeman effortlessly. Kudos.

Coming to Fincher -  Count me one of his biggest fan. I have watched almost all films by him. And each film by him is made differently and very well.

Se7en is definitely among his finest works. The direction is par excellence. The storytelling is brilliant.

Harris Savides does an excellent job at cinematography. The grim mood, dark tone is well captured with the rainy/cloudy weather. The soundtrack is good too.

All in all, Seven is not just an intelligent thriller but a work of art. A must watch for any quality movie lover. But a word of caution - The movie is very disturbing. Its not for the weak stomachs, for sure. The murder scenes, the victims may put you off. The climax is shocking and very disturbing.

The Producers themselves were not so happy with the climax, but Brad Pitt insisted it be retained or he will walk out of the project. And the climax is sure very powerful and works well, given the movie's theme.

Highly recommended..
