Before I start telling you about Senor Pepe, let me warn you! If adventure at your platter is not your cup of tea, stay away. For all those who are ready to get their taste buds on fire, read on…
The magic word here is, Mexican. Of course, most of us know Mexico as that rough and mean place where a clout county is at the run (Thanks for all those old time American Movies with lots of Bang-bangs). So its only natural that the menu out of there is a little mean. Senor Pepe is the only restaurant in Chennai with exclusive Mexican menu. The interiors are built to match its name. It does give you that feel of rowdy place. Even the waiters are dressed to fit that profile. Only thing that changes that for better is the nice smile on these guys.
Let me tell you about the little Mexican I know from here. Very unlike our Indian system where there is a staple and a dish to go with, these guys believe in eating what we call the dish exclusively. Like, when they say, chicken, you get a full tummy of chicken and chicken alone. That too in generous quantities!
Before you touch your fork, keep a glass or water (or many glasses) at your arms length. You are gonna need ‘em all! Everything they serve is so Hot! Apparently, this is what I love most about them. What ever you order, they dab it in a wonderful concoction of spices, of which chilly being the most outstanding and bring it to you. Most of the time, I ask for a cup of My favorite Coco Cola. I make sure that the waiter knows my order to fill it every time it goes below the half line. Its my little strategy of dealing with Mexican.
Even though I feel as if my tongue is on fire while eating, I can’t help noticing how delicious the dish is. This place being a part of the wide chain of restaurants managed by Mahadeva Reddy, I am not surprised at all. Senor pepe is the place for you if you believe in eating anything other than an aircraft and Ship.(Those from TN Knows what I mean :D) Vegeterians, stay out of there. You may have to starve in there. I never quiet get to learn the names they use for each dish. They could easily pass off as tongue twisters. But not as good a twister when you have it on your tongue. My advise is, go for anything that says chicken there. And those combos with Spagetti are wonderful too.
Oh, I almost forgot! Every time I visit them, I get a heartfelt laugh off the door man here. I am considered to be very tall at 6’4”. And this man who lets me in falls a few inches below my belt. I don’t mean to be rude. But I love this guy!
Hey wait, before you head out to this restaurant, there may be a few more things you want to know. Firstly, the location. It is right across Chola Sheraton on Cathedral Road, Alwarpet. Secondly, a visit to this place with your loved one in hand could make you instantly poorer by not less than a 4 digit figure. Trust me, to dine in style, it does cost you dearly. (I was saved by the wonders of Plastic money on my first visit :)
