How broadband came into our lives!

There was a time when the only low-cost internet technology was dial-up.It took ages to get connected, was easily disturbed and disconnected. At the same time the phone bills that resulted were quite exorbitant.Indeed maintaining an internet connection was a pain to say the least.Specially, if your budget was limited as mine is.I was completely fed up with the dial-up thing when I was advised to get an IWay card.

To enroll you needed to pay Rs 30/- I think and you had to buy internet time thereafter. It was really a blessing.IWays had opened all over Calcutta and with the same card you could avail of the facilities of each in just the same way. This meant broadband was close at hand wherever one was.And in this cyber age a high speed(256K) internet connection is certainly useful.

Apart from being able to access the whole variety of sites some of which will only respond to broadband you can view movies, listen to music and play games like never before. And that brings up the most important aspect of an IWay.These are gaming hubs like nothing else before them.

School and college-going kids throng each IWay in large numbers to play their favorite computer games. And while they play they discuss animatedly their various strategies and tactics. And to non-gamer like me, this offers an insight into the minds of these green people who are so different from those in our time.Indeed when IWays were at their prime(they are not now) it was a great place to meet like-minded intelligent people.

But with the advent of home broadband things are different.Still, the IWay remains a place where you can surf the net at hi-speed while enjoying the company of friends some of whom are quite knowledgable about all matters under the sun.
