Knowing that Sarkar came from Ramu's stable, I knew that there wont be any unnecessary songs, emotional melodrama or what have you. As expected, the movie was taut and smooth, not much space for frivolous things.

The movie follows The Godfather's massive footsteps quite efficiently, right from the starting scene. The characters are well adapted and one can relate them to their environment. Ramu has held the movie taut and given no chance for any slag in the narrative. So you end with your eyes glued to the screen, knowing that a single glance, a mere look is going to transfer thousand words. Casting, as is with Ramu's movies (even the bad ones), is spot on.

Amithab Bachchan as Subhash Nagare is superb. One realises that so much potential of this actor is wasted in the Raj Malhotra type roles.....gives us more of realistic you, Mr. Bachchan. Abhishek conveys mostly thru his eyes, Sarkar adding one more good performance to his growing list....but one request, I hope that corrects his posture soon, he comes across pretty sloppy at times. Kay Kay has few scenes, but as usual, he doesnt disappoint at all, he practically sizzles. But Zakir Hussain as Rashid was my favourite of the lot...he has maybe 2 dialogues, but his presence itself is menacing. I wouldnt like to have him staring at ME for whatever reasons,it sent chills down my spine. The females have hardly any role and thankfully not much of the reel is wasted on them.

As far as plot goes, as all know, it has been adapted from Godfather. Its a good adaptation, but couldve been much better. I personally felt that the movie was kinda hurried through. The transformation of Abhishek from a US returned fella to taking over his father's mantle couldve been shown with more detail. Also the ease with which Sarkar's enemies are bumped off in the end, hardly gives credit to men who almost caused his downfall. I felt that the movie was rushed thru at this stage.

Overall an excellent attempt at adapting one of cinema's classics. Ramu proves once again, that the more cinema apes real life, the more it becomes entertaining.
