Hi Friends,

Some one told me one day that ‘Sarkar’ is a movie based on the classic novel The Godfather. I was quite surprised and happy to listen that but never got time to see this movie despite the fact that I have read that novel 4 times.

Finally when I saw there were some things I was very happy about and some other things that I was not so happy about.

The Story

Story is very much inspired by The Godfather. Someone said me it was based on Bala Sahib Thakrey’s life, this statement is completely false. The character of Subhash Nagre (Sarkar) in the movie is nothing but Don Corleone of The Godfather. And the story more or less is the same with some differences to make it a little different. That attempt to redo the story and make it suit the Indian cinema and the Mumbai Underworld are indeed laudable.

If I tell you the story here, then I will have to tell you the whole thing, so go and see it for yourself. But there is one thing I will suggest to all, read The Godfather first, you will be able to enjoy the movie more!

The Direction

Direction of the movie is superb. Ram Gopal Varma has done one hell of a job. The movie is magnificently directed and is not loose for a moment. The pace of story is good. When a person does is job correctly there is not much else left but to sit and enjoy and commend the attempt. The direction is simply flawless.

Music and Background score

The movie is song-less. Seems like bollywood has started to mature, because there is practically no need to dancing-around-in-rain songs anymore. The background score is weak, certainly week for such a movie because the movie is very strong with heavy characters. Those characters are played by actors who have great screen presence. And when all the larger than life figures start to act all emotions and drama and no dialogues it is very important to support such heavy and dramatic scenes with good background music. That is where the movie fails and quite miserably. The background score is weak.

Screenplay and Editing

Both are great. The serious dramatic scenes with very less dialogues and a lot of emotions and drama are very well written. The screenplay supports the characters and gives ample time to every character. Editing of the movie is great, when you are making a movie directly inspired from the Godfather you better do not mess around inside and give the people what the are expecting because a lot of people might have read the novel or seen the Hollywood version of the movie.

In both there areas the movie scores good points.

The Acting

Finally, the acting is simply superb. Amitabh Bachhan plays Sarkar. Style of AB is very different from that of Marlon Brando so you are expecting a Brando act from AB forget it. This one’s unique. Watch Maqbool, the character of Abbaji played by Pankaj Kapoor is a true tribute to Marlon Brando but Sarkar is very different.

Abhishek Bachhan is also great. I wonder how has this man suddenly started to throw brilliant performances suddenly, he was such a hope less actor when he started. Nevertheless, junior Bachhan has done justice with his character. I think he should have given more screen time.

Rest of the actors are good also. Katrina Kaif is completely wasted, her character could have been eliminated completely. Tanisha is also a complete waste of character. Only one – Katrina or Tanisha would have been sufficient.

Finally,

It is a great movie to be enjoyed.

Enjoy,

Khagesh Gautam
