I have closely followed Rajkumar Hirani's work. Munnabhai MBBS was good with some scenes standing out, like the carrom playing scene where the ailing sick father is back into action, after playing a few shots of his favourite game.

I am all for breaking convention.

Respect is due, to Mr. Hirani also, for making a generation that had either forgotten or vilified Gandhiji to once again highlight the greatness of the soul.

However, Sanju is a different story.

While Ranbir Kapoor excels in his performance, giving close attention not just to the physical aspects but also the emotional turmoil, Rajkumar Hirani fails to engage the audience in a compelling story.

In Lage Raho Munnabhai, Munnabhai apologises to Circuit after slapping him. In a sense the conscience keeper in Rajkumar Hirani's movies could always be felt.

Not this time.

Here, it was as if he had taken up a case for Sanjay Dutt and perhaps unknowingly, he went overboard in blaming others for his mistakes.

The humour is also crude and it is difficult to now compare Rajkumar Hirani with Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

The way Rajkumar Hirani shames antagonists or anyone in his protagonist's way is clearly insensitive and not in sync with his style of clean film-making.

Another problem is also dumbing things down a bit too much-and adding unnecessary characters.

Redeeming feature of the movie is Ranbir Kapoor, along with Vicky Kaushal who portray their roles very well.

How Sanjay Dutt overcame his addiction for drugs and how Sunil Dutt was a father who stood behind him, all throughout were strong elements that the entire movie could be based on.

Visually the era of eighties and nineties wasn't recreated and there was no coherence.

Kar har maidaan fateh is a nicely sung, and good motivational song.

Given the fact that Sanjay Dutt was very close to his Mom, the director lost an opportunity to include more of Mrs. Nargis Dutt in the movie.

Instead precious time was wasted in depicting seemingly funny scenes that were actually crude and lacked sensitivity and dignity.

This time around, Mr. Rajkumar Hirani wasn't telling a story. He was a cinematic lawyer taking up a case and a judge missing no opportunity to accuse the media and lambasting it.

While Sanjay Dutt has served his sentence and has sobered down, association with Rajkumar Hirani has definitely helped in a change of image.

Mr. Rajkumar Hirani is the top-most director of the country. One expects better from him, and hopes he goes back to becoming a honest storyteller.

Sanju- One man, many saviours.
