Rarely has an Indian sportswoman attracted so much attention at the begining of her career, as Sania Mirza has..

the 18 year old hyderabad native has captured the imagination of tennis fans in india ( & the media too) in her short career so far..Before she arrived on the scene, only once had an Indian woman gone past the first round of a Grand Slam..

Unlike the mens game, where R Krishnan,Vijay Amritraj,Leander Paes & Mahesh Bhupati achieved a fair amount of success, the womens game had lagged far behind with no credible success to speak of..

All that might just change with the entry of Sania

She first gave an indication of her abilities to the whole country by winning the junior girls doubles title at Wimbledon as a 16 year old in 2003.

She turned professional in 2003 & tasted success in the lower level tournaments at Boca Raton, London,Manila & Jakarta..

But it was in 2005 that Sania really made an impression...she was given a Wild Card entry into the Australian Open (since her ranking of 166 wasnt good enough for direct entry)...She immediately made a mark, reaching the Third round before losing to former world no.1 Serena Williams..

the following month,Sania achieved another landmark by winning her first career WTA title at the Hyderabad Open (becoming the first Indian woman to achieve this feat). She followed that up by beating World No. 6 Svetlana kuznetsova during the Dubai Open ,for the biggest win of her career....

Just as Sania was climbing up the rankings,an unfortunate ankle injury hampered her chances at the French Open ,causing her to lose in Round 1 itself...

But Sania seems to have shrugged off that injury now & won herself quite a few fans by her impressive showing at Wimbledon, where she gave Kuznetsova a run for her money on Centre Court.

Sania is presently ranked around 75 in the world & has every chance of rising up if she can keep herself fit & free from injuries....She also needs a full time Professional coach to travel with her ( all top players have their own travelling coaches)

Currently Sania is coached by her father Imran & by Australian Bob Brett.

Sania has attained unimaginable popularity in a very short time due to the aggressive play on Court as well as her fashion sense & good looks....

Indian Tennis fans can surely look forward to more spectacular results from Sania in the years to come....
