Fifth Samsung IIFA awards

First of all I don?t agree with the name IIFA which expands as?International Indian Film Awards?. Is the award show is for whole Indian cinema, if so then there is nothing wrong in naming it as?International Indian? but it honors only bollywood cinema which is a part of Indian cinema. In fact bollywood cinema doesn?t reveal the true face of Indian cinema.

Actually the true talents are there in regional language films like Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil etc., Does bollywood deserves to represent Indian cinema? Instead it makes a bad impression on Indian cinema(except a few movies in Hindi). Those who doesn?t know about what Indian cinema will assume that Indian cinema is all fantasy tales filled with lot of melodrama and colorful songs and dancers dancing with lavish costumes but is it the real picture of Indian cinema. I don?t know why nobody did oppose this title yet. If it is?international Indian? are there nominees in each categories are from all Indian language films.

Answer is No. So, I strictly oppose this title. What they mean by International? Does the winners are selected by the viewers all over the world? Or is it because just it is held outside India? Silly. In bollywood these award shows are just a business. No talent is truly honored? A person getting an award depends on his fame and his popularity and his(not to the Indian cinema) contribution and lot of politics are running behind the stage.

Further more, in Oscar style there was Red Carpet on that evening and the so called stars of the bollywood enters the arena walking in the Red Carpet and giving interviews to televisions and press. One of them said it is going like Indian Oscar. The show can?t even lick the boot of Oscar. I accept even Oscars have become a great show of business and the awards are unfair but it is not as much worse as this bollywood awards especially IIFA.

The Fifth Samsung IIFA award held in Singapore is yet another colorful extravaganza, which gives less importance to awards and more to premier shows and press meets and developing the tourism of the place where it is held.

Coming to the awards

Here are the awards

/Best in Category - Award winner - Percentage I agree with the choice - My Choice/

Best Film - Kal Ho Naa Ho - 0% - Teen Deewarein / Munnabhai MBBS

If this is for the best popular film it must go to Munnabhai MBBS or if it is for a classic cinema it must go to?Teen Deewarein?. KHNH is an old wine in a new bottle and it is a usual commercial flick and it doesn?t deserve to be titled as a?Best? Film at all. May be the voters don?t understand the difference between?Best? and?Popular?. In fact one can quote more cons than pros about the movie.

*Best Director - Rakesh Roshan( Koi Mil Gaya) - 0% - Ram Gopal Varma(Bhoot)

What is so difficult is directing a remake movie? They reduce the standards of directors here by giving away the award to Rakesh Roshan, can you mention any one scene that has a directorial touch, it is all the visual effects, which made the film atleast worth a watch once, and not his direction. Atleast if the story is something original we can laud his efforts. There is no originality at all in the movie and in his direction. I feel Ram gopal varma deserves to receive this award for his excellent thriller?Bhoot?.

He is the director who tries something different in each and every film and he extracts the best from all his cast and crew. When bollywood is going with some masala flicks with songs, dances and comedies he made a bold attempt?Bhoot? with international standards.

Best Actor - Hrithik Roshan( Koi Mil Gaya) - 30% - Sanjay Dutt(Munnabhai MBBS)

I don?t understand Hrithik gets all the best actor awards this year for his dumb performance in KMG. As mentioned in Hindu review, it is enough if he would have done 100% but he entirely spoiled by doing it 200%. His expressions and acting are monotonous in all the scenes and to some extent I can accept it as a nice attempt and he has tried his level best but it is not up to the level of getting?Best Actor? award. Sanjay Dutt in Munnabhai MBBS is the sure winner this year, he has given his best performance to date in this movie, his timing sense, dialogue delivery everything is excellent which made the movie a great success. So my award goes to Sanjaybhai.

Best Actress - Preity Zinta( Kal Ho Naa Ho) - 0% - Urmila Matondkar(Bhoot)

First of all Best Comedy of the year is Preity getting two nominations in this category and further she gets a award for her out(of the auditorium where the show held)standing performance in KHNH. Urmila was great and far far better than Preity in Bhoot as a real housewife and also in period drama?Pinjar?.

Best Supporting Actor- Saif Ali Khan( Kal Ho Naa Ho) - 100%

Though it is mere an extension of his character in Dil Chahtha Hai, he is the one who steals the show amidst the boring performances of Sharukh and Preity.

Best Supporting Actress- Jaya Bachan( Kal Ho Naa Ho) - 0% - Revathi(Dhoop)

The role itself is half baked and Jaya has nothing special to offer of her caliber in that role but Revathi shines in her performance as a mother of a dead Soldier in Dhoop.

Best Performance in a comical role- Boman Irani( Munnabhai MBBS) - 100%

Best Performance in a negative role- Feroz Khan( Janasheen) - 100%

Best Story - Karan Johar( Kal Ho Naa Ho) - 0% - Nagesh Kukunoor(Teen Deewarein)

It is the second worst award of the show. KHNH has the very usual triangular love story and the movie survived only because of its fresh treatment in the screenplay and as far as story is concerned it is the very oldest story of indian cinema. But if for a original plot my choice is to Nagesh Kukunoor for Teen Deewarien for a very unusual and a meaningful plot.

*Best Screenplay - Rajkumar Irani and Co( Munnabhai MBBS) - 100%

The screenplay is first rate in this movie. For comedy movies the screenplay is the major strength and it is very well written by these three people for Munnabhai MBBS.

Best Music Direction - Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy( Kal Ho Naa Ho) - 100%

Best Play back singer(Male)- Sonu Nigam(Kal Ho Naa Ho title song)- 100%

Best Play back singer(Female)- Shreya Ghosal(Jism) - 100%

Best Lyrics- Javed Akthar - 100%

This year awards have gone to the most deserving people in music, lyrics and playback singing categories. Sonu and Shreya are unaguably the best this year.

Best Choreography - Farah khan(?Maahi ve?) -100%

Though the choreo is not the best there is no any better choreo this year and hence I agree with this choice.

Best Cinematography - Anil Metha(Kal Ho Naa Ho) - 100%

Best Art Direction - Sharmishtha Roy - 30% - Pinjar(Munish sappal)

Art direction though eye catching and colorful in KHNH it is unrealistic and so my choice is Munish for Pinjar which had some realistic sets replicating the period of the plot.

Best Costume - Manish malhotra - 100%

Best Make up - Mike Contractor(Kal Ho Naa Ho) -100%

Costumes and Makeup are the sure winners than the actors in KHNH and hence deserving.

Best Action - LOC Kargil - 100%*

Atlast LOC gets an award which was ignored in almost all other award shows. Action was well exceuted in the movie and quite believable.

Best Editing - Munnabhai MBBS - 100%

Best Visual Effects - Koi Mil Gaya - 100%
