Hello Friends,
Its been a long time since I reviewed a product. I am back from wilderness where I had wandered off. BY "wilderness" I mean the sea of China Make / Indo-China Make mobiles. At the onset, I was a purist. Always going for Nokia / Samsung mobiles only. You can ready my reviews on Nokia 5300 and Nokia 5610 in this site.
In 2009 on seeing a friends Korean touchscreen phone, I was attracted towards it. This was only the beginning 3 Years and 8 mobiles(including GFive, Karbonn, Blue Tooth, WiWO, Micromaxx and zen),
I am back. to normal. No Hard feelings friends. All these phones which I have mentioned are super utility phones. But they lack one thing. CLASS. Also they have got more issues pertaining to touch, screen, software and especially battery. IN ALL THE 8 MOBILES that I purchased, the batter performed well only for 6-8 months then it started giving problems and I had to charge them on daily basis and it became worse.
FINALLY I DECIDED THAT ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH AND DECIDED TO COME-BACK TO BRANDED PHONES.
I decided to go in for a entry level Android Phone and Shortlisted LG GT 540, NOKIA C5, SAMSUNG GALAXY POP S 5570 AND SONY ERICCSON - XPERIA MINI 10.
Finally I purchased the Samsung Galaxy Pop S 5570 on 01-05-2011 ( I generally purchase something new on this day as it is my son's birthday). Price Rs. 8500 with 4 GB Card from Poorvika Mobiles, Chennai. (2 GB card was in box. I exchanged it for a 4 GB card by paying extra Rs. 200) so total landed cost was Rs. 8700/-
The Galaxy Pop is a Smart Phone running on Android 2.2 Froyo OS. Friends, you can get all the technical data / specification on any of the sides. I will only give my comments on the usage over the last 5 months.
The phone is stylish, sleek and has an attractive design. The touch experience is good( certainly better than Chinese / Korean / IMCF). Games, especially "Angry Birds" pans out very well. The phone is neither too light nor too heave. Although the body is made of some plastic it has a solid feel.
Camera Quality is 3.15 MP. During Day light the pictures come out well. In night, under artificial lighting the results are poorer.
Volume on speaker is above average. Quality of music through ear phones is decent. The phone does not hang or seem to hang while browsing through the files thanks to the enhanced processor.
The only downside to the phone is its battery life when in use. The following were my observations in real life use.
I have a BSNL connection and the signal strength is very good. The following were the results.
1. 2 to 3 Calls per day of 2 minutes duration with 8-10 incoming / out Going SMS. No Music, No Internet, No GPRS, No Camera: The Baterry was exhausted after 48 hours
2. Same as above, only GPRS was activited and Face Book was on: 40 Hours(approx)
3. Continuous Browsing the Internet: Battery was down from FULL TO ZERO in 4 Hours.
So to average the timings. I can confirm that with a usage of 6 to 7 calls of 3 minutes each, 8-10 incoming / out going SMS, Browsing the interet for 15-20 Minutes and Listening to Music for 1 hour and playing games for 30 Minutes, : the battery will go from FULL to NIL in around 24 Hours.
To sum it up. This phone has all the features that one can expect in a high end smart phone. But the poor battery pulls down the performance. Its like tendulkar or dravid playing for Team - Bermuda.
ON THE WHOLE. FOR ITS PRICE OF 8500 BUCKS ITS A VERY GOOD PHONE FOR PEOPLE WHO ONLY USE THE MOBILE TO MAKE CALLS AND SMS AND LISTEN TO MUSIC AND ABOVE ALL - FLAUNT IT.
ONCE THE INTERNET IS SWITCHED ON.ITS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE BATTERY.
