My IBM Notepad did not have a CD Writer. It only had a DVD drive.
I was on the lookout for a cheap CD writer ( exteral) as internal OEM Drives were costing about 10K. ( IBM)
I stumbled upon a cute little idea. I got an regular CD writer and I got a cabinet which has an IDE to USB converter and power supply, at a very attractive price point.
Just today, I purchased the product and have installed it successfully. with minimum hardship. I dint need to use any of the CD drivers provided as my Windows XP directly recognised the TECH com cabinet/converter & the Samsung Writer.
I tried burning CDs. and it worked like a dream, without much reduction in speed. The specifications is for USB 2.0 where it is supposed to work even faster.
I am sure there will be many like me who have had similar predicaments with IBM.
the cost of equipment
Samsung Drive with 1 year Guarantee : Rs 1290.00
Tech-Com Cabinet/powersupply/IDE 2 USB converter : Rs 1050.00
==============================================
Total investment : Rs 2340.00

I am only concerned at life for the cabinet, which I have no idea of.
warm regards
Hari.
