Saawariya
Rarely does a movie like Saawariya come, as it comes once in a while. I would say it may not find patronage now, but it will get its due in the future. However, Saawariya is a good Diwali flick. Yes, it has its flaws, but which movie doesn’t? We accept movies like Devdas (2002), and that was a boring flick, and still SLB worst film till date, but Indian audience can’t accept Saawariya?
Devdas was 3hours plus, this is only 2 hours, I don’t see anything wrong with Saawariya length. It’s not like it’s a 3 hour flick. Anyways, Indian audience has some different perspective. They accept torture like Phir Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Dhoom 2, Garv, Aap Ka Surrour and many other flicks Hits, but they made great flicks like Omkara, Jaan-E-Mann, Pinjar, Awarapan and many others flop. I’m afraid Saawariya might go the same way. The problem with the Indian audience they want see only mass appeal films, which is wrong. That’s why a movie like American Gangster, Doctor Zhivago, Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, Godfather, Godfellas, The Departed and Blood Diamond will never work with the Indian audience. I’m a Indian, and I think its time they need to open up and appreciated films that is not mass appeal.
PROS
Ranbir Kapoor. He makes an excellent debut and he is sure to win the audience with this performance. Yes, he tends to go overboard sometimes, but as the guy who loves the girl, but the girl who doesn’t reciprocate his love, you will sympathize with him. He has the Best Debut with him Music by Monty is excellent. For a newcomer to give this kind of music, you can ensure he has a bright future ahead of him. Every song is well played and the best songs in the album are the title track, Jab Se Tere Naina, Yoon Shabnami, Masha-Allah, Jaan-E-Jaan, and Chhabeela. Rani Mukherji is excellent in her supporting role Excellent sets. If some people found the movie disappointing, they can’t deny the fact that the background set is wonderful It’s about time we get a ending like this movies. Finally, a guy doesn’t get the gyal. If it was a true Indian film, he will get the girl in the ending, but he doesn’t, which was a smart decision from Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But I heard the Indian audience didn’t take it too well, well too bad! Storyline is good. I don’t know how people are finding this a weak storyline because its something unusual. This storyline has happen before like this in Indian movies before, so why are people finding it weak? Here in Toronto, audience clapped for the film at the end, it’s a rare case that it happens. It may have a long run in Toronto!
CONS
Salman Khan is wasted in this film. His hardcore fans are bound to be disappointed, which one of them is me. SLB should’ve used Salman Khan more better No mass appeal. The problem with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he makes it from his heart, and doesn’t care about the audience. His Black, although it’s a great film, it had little mass appeal. It was a good thing that the multiplex audiences accept it (from the big cities), but he thought it may have worked with Saawariya. It worked for me, but not with most of the Indian audience. Songs come up almost every five minutes. This is not a black and white film. But, if Vivah was accepted where songs came up every couple of minutes, then why bother? Sonam Kapoor. He is a very pretty girl, but her acting talent is quite average. She does have a future, but her talent needs to be expressed more
VERDICT
Watch the film to decide for yourself. I personally think it’s a good film, and better than Dard-E-Torture (Om Shanti Om). I’m sure that Saawariya will go the Mera Naam Joker, Kaagaz Ke Phool way, where it flopped and considered a classic in future days. A movie like Saawariya comes once it a while and we should appreciate it. I hope the Indian audience watches this film with a open mind, and not with too much expectations.
