Voters fail in talent search

Generally the voters across the country do not exercise their right in elections and when they do by mistake it has paved way for undeserving and unqualified 'public' servants occupy seats in State Assemblies and in the Parliament. Likewise, the voters who had sms-ed their choice in the just concluded Little Champs. Instead of appreciating the quality of music and singers, they have voted by 'seeing' performers instead of 'listening' them. By their indifferent attitude, they nearly voted out the best singer Sanchita Bhattacharya. Thank God, she became, quite deservedly, the champion by a narrow margin. It was rather unfortunate that a versatile singer like Sameer could reach the third spot. The voters and also the judges have been unfair to Pavani, Sameer and other young talents. They need not have cast alarmingly high votes to Diwakar Sharma, who, if one has to judge purely on musical merits and talent, has been an ordinary singer in all the episodes. Though he is an intelligent child endowed with common sense, memory, and presence of mind (like calling Gajji to sing with him) to cover people and diction but his music is bereft of musical values, bhava or emotion and imagination. Lack of voice modulation and mike sense are major drawbacks in his 'flat' singing. In fact, I would rate even Abrakanti a shade better than Diwakar. One must be strict and non-compromising if you have to select the best.

I for one have been right in identifying and selecting the winner including Shreya. I hear mostly classical Carnatic and Hindustani music but like and enjoy the show for it is based on our music. I have strong objections to three aspects - the children this time were asked to sing the modern, noisy filmi songs on most of the occasions (unlike earlier episodes when our old and immortal filmi songs were rendered by almost all participants) exposing their lack of sense for aesthetics in singing. Secondly, the judges should have been fair in giving grades (I would not have given A to Diwakar for any of his songs). Thirdly, the producer or the channel need not have depended on SMS voting pattern and instead advised the Judges only to adjudge the best, good and poor category. Especially Alkaji and Abhijitji were found helpless and they at least did not go for Diwakar as many occasions Pappida tried to do so.
