I had heard good things about this place; great music was what I heard. But what I was exposed to was pure torture! I just read a few reviews here that says the sound system is good there, but I just got back from the place tonight, and the first thing I noticed about the place is that the sound was deplorable! I sat opposite the fishtank on the tall beer-bar stools and right over my head was a huge local-type looking speaker that made a jarring sound every time the bass was loud. The music....don't even expect good metal (I mean good Maiden, Dreamtheater, Blind Guardian and the likes)! What I heard was pure pop-rock wanna-be music for teenagers just learning about rock!
I had heard that the music turns heavy towards late night, but there was no such luck for me! I had to go through "popular" numbers from REM (yes, REM, not rock, not metal!!!!!), Nirvana, and GNR (Sweet Child of Mine!!! I did not expect a pub that calls itself a haven for rock fans to play that, unless the owners were peudo themselves and thought SCoM is all that rock is about!)!!
Last, let me go through my experiences with the customer service!! The waiters seemed to the greatest rockers themselves, calmly ignoring the customers calling out to them as they listened to their favorite band on the harring audio system! We had to call out to the waiter fifteen times before he finally graced us!...and at the end of it all, when we finally managed to track him down to ask for the bill, he had the f cheek to ask for a tip!! (No, he didn't get any!)
What're my opinion of the place? If I were the manager, I would fire the waiters and kill the DJ! But as I am not the manager, the least I can do is avoid the pseudo place! I am from Delhi, a place that (really) does not rock as Bangalore is supposed to; but I have sadly been to better place places in Delhi than Styx here! If Styx (the real band) ever heard how this place was ruining their reputation, I am sure they would love to sue the owners!
Speaking of litigation, I am sure the pirated videos our dear DJ/VJ at Styx is playing is going to get him (and the pub) into serious trouble! This is the first (and, I guess, only) pub I have come across that runs PIRATED videos!
