STYX was the first pub in Bangalore that I had the pleasure of losing my ol' factory capabilities to and thus it'll always hold a special place in my heart and a h o l e in my eardrum.

Walking in it didn't seem like much, a 200 buck discountable cover for stags and a free ride for any guy who was artful enough to convince a girl to come endure a few hours of ridiculously loud music and comic relief by south indian balding headbangers.

Did I enjoy myself??...Oh hell yeah.

Geez Louise...imagine this rockaholic tyke from a sleepy ol town in godforsaken ''Dry'' gujarat of all places getting sloshed with 100 odd rockgod wannabes who know each and every word of each and every song that the metal crazy DJ plays.

(ofcourse I did come to learn that the reason for their all pervasive sentience is the fact that what I heard that night, a year back, had been played every single night a priori and still continues to be played. Since they have no other inventory regarding metal or rock for that matter, that's how it'll stay for quite a few years to come)

What does STYX offer... well beer for one thing... and lots of peanut masala. Yeah thats the pub bit of it.

But then the terrible seats and the pathetic lighting aren't what we're here for now are we.

It's to see mindless, wish they were drunk 2nd year engineering students from Andhra Pradesh perform the most mind boggling, perplexing and not so healthy headbanging while screaming Nirvana! everytime their excessive intake of teen spirit lead them to the loo.

My personal favorites were the Glam queens accompanying their boyfriends, attired in their lil halter tops and itsy bitsy skirts. The name didn't do justice to the outfit since there was little halting their assets from bursting out as they attempted to let their hair loose in competition with the overweight Malayalee-who bore a striking resemblance to that guy from Art of Living- as he thrust himself back n forth letting his liberated mane fly in their faces.

Well there was beer...and once you have a few beers even rock music's hall of shame starts looking good. Highlight of the evening was getting the two 25-30 year old TCS/Infosys techies accompanying me drunk enough to do the ''Scuba diver'' while Motorhead was playing... much to the chagrin of the rock purists there.

But I have one thing to thank STYX for ...it brought me back to Metallica in such a big way.

God Bless that DJ for cutting the music to ''Wherever I May Roam'', so that every drunk, pretentious, stupid, knows all his/her lyrics kid there had the oppurtunity to scream in unison ''Roamer, wanderer, nomad, vagabond....call me what you will!'' Anyone who's heard this song can only imagine what it would've felt like.

To this kid who had never known a soul who didn't associate Cream with coffee or AC/DC with the Gujarat Electricity Board ... this was magic.

I had fun... maybe because it was my initiation into the pubbing scene, but none of the other pubs have even compared...I can barely tolerate the techno, house lounge pub trash that the rest of Bangalore's night scene offers.

Even the old guard like Purple Haze which plays rock doesn't quite compare.

Gimme 7 bespectacled Computer Science students sharing a single pitcher of beer, with their oiled heads which for no apparent reason start bobbing violently in vociferous acquiescence to the pleas of ''The Third Reich'' prating on about white supremacy and the filth that is the brown man.

Yes the very brown DJ had kept his Confederate Flag out to dry.

Now that's what I call good ol redneck rock n' a rollin.
