Worthless. Review on RuPay

Besides Master card and Visa card, there is a RuPay Card. They were launched by the government the last year.

They are meant for people with low earnings, who do not make big transactions and not want to pay extra for services provided by the bank. Like for the cheque book, or making multiple transactions from ATMs.

Well. I own a Savings account in Oriental bank of commerce and I didnt have a debit card. So at the starting of this year, I had applied for a debit card by filling out a form that I got from their official website.

On the application form, I could clearly see this bank provides only two kinds on Debit Cards i.e VISA card and RuPay card. I didn't know what RuPay card was, so I left both the box uncheckedd and after a few days, I was sent a RuPay card.

As I didn't know much about RuPay so I didn't bother what card it was. But It's worth mentioning that I was not provided an ATM pin which I had to set myself using an ATM of the same bank through an OTP. After I set my PIN, I withdrawn some money and there was no problem.

However after some days I realized I had made a mistake. These cards have some limitations. They cannot be used everywhere. Or internationally. One day I created a Paypal account to redeem my due earnings from a website, but I am not able to confirm my account, as they do not support RuPay cards. Only Visa andaster card are supported. Moreover, there is no other way I can redeem my payment.

The government claims there are many benefits of owning a Rupay card like discounts and cashbacks. I have UPI enabled and several times I have made transactions from this card for online shopping as well as transferring money using Phone Pay but I have not received a single penny discount ever. Not even for Refiling petrol of my scooter.

Highly disappointed.

If you are a freelancer who work online or you make international transactions, I suggest please don't get a Rupay Card.
