#ROOM - It’s a simple story about a single mother Joy ( Brie Larson) and her 5 year old son Jack ( Jacob Tremblay) , their bond and how she home schools him. The simplicity just about ends here, they are actually imprisoned in a 10x10 room by Joy’s abductor Old Nick. Jack has not seen the ‘world’, the ‘outside’ ever, all he sees is a skylight and TV shows and cartoons. Both plan Jack’s escape and then begins the struggle, facing the real world and people who are not playing dress-up.
For a kid who doesn’t even know how wind feels on his face for 5 years - the noises, the surroundings, the artificial lights, the toys and gadgets and relations and TV crews are all so alien. He comes out triumphant and in turn ‘saves’ his mother. The author of the book and the film Emma Donoghue tugs at your heart, with excellent direction by Lenny Abrahamson. Most crime based dramas either turn into macabre or CSI type shows. This one is a tale so riveting that all you remember is a Ma and her truly innocent son. To quote Jack: There's so much of place in the world. There's less time because the time has to be spread extra thin over all the places, like butter. So all the persons say “Hurry up! Let's get going! Pick up the pace! Finish up now! ”
Don’t miss this one as Brie Larson is likely to win an Oscar. Jennifer Lawrence plays another Joy in #JOY and is nominated but I didn’t find the movie so good, the focus was so much on Jennifer’s grit and struggle that they forgot the joy and success. Even Robert DeNiro couldn’t get to your heart, the way he did in The Intern. Yes, shut everybody up whose entered the theater to yak - this isn't Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
