PLOT:

Well, just to tel you all, I wanted to watch this movie since a long time, fed by the media frenzy around it, and also my love for music. And I am glad that I did. The movie defies all odds to become an experience that cannot be forgotten. Firstly, it has no script whatsoever. There are are instances where there is nothing happening on screen, just some kisses. At some instances the script goes point blank, shifting from silly to brainless. There is just no space for anyone to shine except Ranbir. So how does a movie with little script, go on to become a favorite and a hit? Its because of just a bunch of people that it goes from bad, to good, to great.

The film starts on a great note, with the first part being the main reason behind its success. Like most films we have seen this year, the first part keeps you waiting for whats coming next. The humour is poured in bits and parts. The scenes at Hindu College are really great. The Janardan Jakhar is aptly shown as the one who just cant become a rockstar.(I wouldn't like to highlight the particulars as it would spoil the experience when you watch it.) The college teacher is the only one who shines except ranbir. He sets the stereotypical of a rock-star in JJ's mind. The meeting with Heer( who is about to get married) are filled with fun. The way JJ and Heer get on, their escapades into the wild world of Delhi, their truthfullness with each other and the fun they have are efficiently captured by Imtiaz Ali in his pure' Love Aaj Kal Style'. Kashmir(where they go for Heer's marriage) is shown in all its colors, and the little jig on'Yeh Chand Sa Raushan Chera' is more of a tribute.

Here the script stumbles a bit. Doesn't anyone notice when the bride goes out for hours with another guy? The groom is also not shown on the day of marriage. He is introduced much later. Heer, after marriage, goes to Prague with her husband. The NEW JJ, after returning to Delhi is shown  completely changed. His music has soul, and he now has an'image'. The journey of Janardan Jakhar transforming to Jordan is shown through pure music. a few dialogues here and there is all it needs to show us the pain he undergoes. This is one of the points in the movie int he script when u feel' now what?' but sadly, it just goes down from here. The music, the cinematography and the acting by Ranbir Kapoor are the only things that make this film this good. JJ, due to a song at a Mata ka Jagrata, is now a famous online celebrity. Just then, he strikes a deal with a company for an album to be shot overseas in Prague!

Soon, we see Prague getting mesmerized by own rockstar who gladly sings n dances his way through with our beauty. They spend great time together before Jordan kind of forces her to kiss. She decides to cut contact. Bumm! Here comes the interval. An excuse to let us buy a coke while the writer goes on a stroll with his brains kept home. The part after the interval starts on a boring note. The husband invites Jordan for dinner and suggests Heer to be a part of Jordan's show. Soon,  they get together, kiss, make out, and in one of her guilty moments, she ask Jordan to leave. In a frenzy, Jordan breaks into her house, and is jailed for trespassing.

Jordan is deported n spends some time in Indian jails. This is the time when the script strats getting a bit high. Jordan is now more of an angry artist trying to make sense of his life. His album sales are at an all time high. His concerts are mind blowing, and he has become a media induced phenomenon. He is aloof from the world and in his own world. Heer on the other hand is diagnosed with a terminal bone marrow. She is brought to India to meet her parents and spend her last moments here. Her sister asks Jordan to come and meet her n tells him about her condition. He keeps heart and is instrumental in helping her imrpve her health. and then in a somewhat untoward incident, Heer dies. Jordan is blamed for it. Cussing happens. The last scene is a somewhat wrecked Jordan performing in Prague while Heer dies.

MUSIC:

The music, by the master himself, is one of the best in recent times. The movie is more of an ode to the rockstar. Its the music that shows the transformation from JJ to Jordan. Tracks like' Jo bhi main",  and' Kun faaya kun' stay with you till much after the movie ends. The concerts are the only place where the director truly shines. The concerts leave you completely awestruck.' Saadda Haq' takes the music to another level.'Naadan parindey' is an apt ending to this soulful journey. Mohit Chauhan's voice is just beautiful!'Tum Ho' is another beautiful number.

CINEMATOGRAPHY:

*Cinematography by Anil Mehta leaves you in love with the locations. Shot in Prague, Kashmir, Delhi, and a song in Dharamsala, the snow clad peaks, the serene locales of Europe, are all shown beautifully.

CAST PERFORMANCE:

**For Ranbir Kapoor, this is the role of his lifetime. He was refreshing in Wake Up Sid, innocent in APKGK and smart in Rajneeti. But in Rockstar, he shows his mettle and leaves no stone unturned in becoming the quintessential heart broken rockstar. This movie is essentially a role of a lifetime for him. he leaves little place for anyone else to shine. Nargis is fresh, but has little to do in the film. her hindi is good, and she suits the part of a kashmiri really well. Late Shammi Kapoor, sadly, makes his last silver screen appearance, and is as lively on a wheelchair as anyone. Kumud Mishra as Khatana is humorous and fun.

OVERALL:

Watch this movie for the mindblowing concerts, music, locales, and RANBIR KAPOOR.
