Even Before I rented this flick I somehow knew I'm gonna be dissapointed & how correct I was. But that doesnt mean I didnt enjoy the film. After all the film is about the 80's heavy metal era Rock'n Roll lifestyle. It's based on the true story of Tim ''Ripper'' Owens, who had headed British Steel a Judas Priest cover band before he was asked to front the real thing when Priest's Rob Halford left the band in 1996. Now that would make any metal fan go & rent this one out. But the music is anything but Priest kinda classic heavy metal. Its more like the Def Leppard kinda hard rock. But its still fun...I might even buy the soundtrack.
Rock Star is more a love story than the story of a heavy metal singer. Its about how glamour & showbiz corrupts you & shite like that. Nowhwre has the director tried to explain why the music matters so much in their lives... The most imp factor!!!!
If u have seen those ROCKUMENTRY on MTV ,then this movie is more like a silver screen Rockumentry. The director seems to have grown up watching them & fantasised about making a movie about all these.
The movie is about Chris Cole frontman for Blood Pollution a cover band to the mega-metal English band Steel Dragon. Chris worships STEEL DRAGON lead singer Bobby Beers (Jason Fleming in another wonderful cameo) & does everything to immitate his idol. He even gets his n1pple pierced a week after Bobby does it. But this obsession with STEEL DRAGON is bound to drive his bandmates crazy. They would rather perform their “original” work than cover for another band all their life & quite rightfully so. So they throw Chris out of the band after another on stage brawl with his friend & bandmate who goes unto his own solo deviating from the original stuff.
And as luck would have it the very next morning he gets a call from Steel Dragon's lead guitarist, Kirk Cuddy (Dominic West in a very impressing act) asking him for an audition as Bobby Beers has just quit. After that its all rock'n roll lifestyle all the way as Chris(now IZZY) plunges into a heady world of drugs, orgies, blowjobs, pussies, groupies,wrecked hotel rooms and all the other perks of '80s heavy metal lifestyle. And in the process loses his long time sweetheart Emily(Jenifer Aniston).
Now the movie could have been much better if the love story hadnt been thrusted on it. I mean I dont think the relationship was all that important to him.
Then i'm tired of seeng Wahlberg play the small town dude who makes it big. But he does an OK job. But he has been supported immensely by the rest of the cast. Timothy Olyphant, Dominic West,Jason Fleming all fit the bill as heavy metal dudes. But its the manager of STEEL DRAGON who takes the cake. Then there are loadsa real musicians who played acted in the movie. The STEEL DRAGON include the likes of drummer Jason Bonham ( son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham),Zakk Wylde from Ozzy Osbourne.
Watch this movie if u love heavy metal.
And yeah if anyone of u aspire to become a heavy metal singer the secret is given in the movie- U gotta EAT lota Pussies...LOADSA PUSIES!!!!!.... & have a brit accent. I loved the scene where Wahlberg practices to put on a brit accent.
