One liner : "The best movie concept ever in b-wood" or a very tight slap on the face of "educated" people who think rock and roll is only about sex and drugs more like "-If you like me, raise your hand, if you don't, raise your standard !! "
When the movie was released , I was desperately hoping that it changes the music scene in the country. Now I am sure, "rock and roll" will be a revolution. Finally in India, its already showing its colour !!
Music First :
All music composed by "Ehsaan Noorani" from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy tag.All leads, guitarist/riffs done by him. It was a nice move to make. Farhan sing imparting music and the film a sense of realness.
Suraj (Jagan) is a great rock singer "Zehreelay" the thrash/heavy metal track . Caralisa (Monteiro) and Dominique (Cerejo) who sung the two mellow songs are fine singers with totally different voices and they are completely apart from the typical film voices. Socha Hai A rock-blues movie opening song essentially based around the guitar riff which opens the song! Beautiful lyrics and riffs...lead is neat. Zehreelay The heavy metal song on the album which Suraj has rendered like a true rock star! The guitar solo on this song is totally "disturbed" inspired
Tum Ho Toh The rock ballad on the song has a wonderful vibe and it is completely different from the other songs... Sinbad the Sailor There have been songs like Achilles Last Stand and Brave Ulysses in the past
so this concept is really cool. It has a great jangle to it.
Pichle Saat Dinon Mein (Live) Essentially a live version of the
song to give people a feel of the film. Phire Dekhiye Caralisa's vocals
take this song to a different level!...composed in English to get the
right feel after which Javed Akhtar wrote the words (in Hindi). Loy has
played a million dollar piano solo in the 2nd interlude.
MOVIE :
The movie revolves around hope, music, struggle to get your dreams
and relationships. Farhan Akhtar is well versed in depicting
youngsters’ in relations and friendships the story has not many twists
and turns but the depiction is clear. The film is about four friends
Rob, Aditya, KD and Joe, who form a ROCK band. The four are passionate
about music and they want to get the break of their life and the basic
show of the film is about how they struggle and work hard to get the
final break. The film shows these rockers..occupied in music depicting
that even after putting on all effort many times you don’t get the
result you deserved after years, but that is when, if you are not ready
to loose hope, you continue to work towards your goal, you may achieve
success.
The performance of Farhan is new and kewl, Prachi Desai looks cute
and ideal, Arjun is best of all(i'l come back at this), and Shahana
Goswami is competent. Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny are ok..Purab enacts a
drummer as it is...(later). Koel Purie is average.
Farhan Akhtar : Too good. Superb production and neatly carried
character...all expression are well justified...plus...a unique voice
to all songs...well done little boy...but I personally would give him
credit only for the movie concept...he is not a hero material
otherwise....looked great and carried the vocalist stuff pretty pretty
well !!! Besides...Rampal looks HUGE and overshadows others in all
scenes anyways.....
Ahh Arjun Rampal..the only model turned actor who deserves to be
applauded....he has truly enacted a LEAD GUITARIST. Full-on rocker
look...The expressions and stage sense shown by him is really
impressive...I wonder if he moved his fingers wrong on any chord or
lead....and guess what, he actually plays guitar.I remember watching
saif ali khan struggle with sweet child of mine's slash lead and SOnam
Sherpa(Lead Guitars Parikrama) passing out on him at Parikrama studio
delhi, .Saif
Ali is a bad guitarist and a complete loser - posterboy
anyways..Parikrama is not respected in Indian rock community because of
their wannabe commercial acts and inclusion of Saif aLi for publicity
stunt...y a loser man??? Back to rampal : The attitude and the feel on
his face that he carries in both live performances is
kickarse..specially the sindabad number..i felt the chill through my
spine as I saw him enter the stage with that dashing rocker look(i
importune it was a dave mustain(megadeth) look) and white gibson...and
it would have given all indian band guitarists - the real goose
bumps...The best part that his character portrays is - "I CAN LIVE IN
RAGS BUT I WON'T PLAY GUITAR FOR COMMERCIAL." This is what rock
and roll is all about.....Rock and roll never was commercial unlike
godforsaken MTV(massacring the indian youth with rodies unethical
reality shows ...hip hop..rap plus yes...indi-pop..this is not
music...)..Channel V(spiltsvilla...indi-pop..commercial music) and what
not....as for rock and roll : Underground bands still exist and will
contd to do so...rock and roll is a religion for people who love
it..people who know the true sense of music. The reason for band
break-up was amazingly carried out by rampal...bloody GHATI channel V
management asks MAGIK to include a "SHAADI" song in rock album..then
the channel people focus only on "vocalist" ......GHAATI indian
mentality created by COMMERCIALISING and killing the very essence of
music...The rebel feel which comes in rampal's heart and mind..is
genuine and the ATTITUDE portrayed with those solid punches is truly
solid rock stuff....so LEAD GUITARIST stuff...ATTITUDE !!
Purab Kohli..reminded me of my band and my golden old days as a
drummer...that goatee...i havent been able to grow for sooo
long...all his sense of humour genuinely exhibits a drummer's nature
and ENERGY....All those kinky acts...restlessness and WILDERNESS are a
part of a drummer's genes...well thought director and well enacted
purab..kudos ! Recall the Gloria Gaynor alternative rock
number...which KD pulls neatly towards the end ??
" First I was afraid....I was petrified.....Kept thinking I
could never live...without you by my side...... I'll survive...I will survive... "
Luke Kenny is natural..i wish I cud have flairy long hair like his
young character...."Rob" he plays Rob...the keyboard maestro... A funny
angle fits in perfectly with Anu Malik in the movie...Anu Malik has
anyways been stealing Deep Purle numbers(Sweet child in time - dil mera
churaya kyun) Metallica...Niel Young..Lynyrd Skynyrd..Yngwie
Malmsteen..ZZ Top....and numerous others...but anyhow..he has atleast
being using inspirational rock to inspire his music...and we heard rock
in hindi :) ...Dying Luke in the movie...surprisingly doesnt take ur
interest away from the movie...it keeps us in there..and our heart goes
for him..although we know it clearly that the character will end post
last stage show...
All in all...ROCK ON is a must watch.
