Janet Jackson definitely defined the 80's with her groundbreaking album Rhythm Nation 1814. Filled with songs concerning social awareness, love and boasting some very ambitious production this album managed to define the times and be ahead of its time. This is personally one of my favorite Janet Jackson albums.

The album opens with the famous ''Rhythm Nation''. The effects and production work on this song is sensational and you can tell infinite care was put in every touch. The song discusses the issues of racism and getting rid of the color lines that hinder our societies. The beat throbs in a militant manner and punctuates the harsh and sincere message of this song.

''Come Back To Me'' is a love song and portrays sincerity of missing someone you love. The music is nice on this song and the lyrics, although simple, manage to get the point across nicely.

''Escapade'' is a song that never fails to put me in a good mood. With its vibrant orchestration, cheerful lyrics and exuberant production I can't imagine staying depressed with this song playing.

''The Knowledge'' is not one of my favorite songs musically on this album, but I really admire and support the message of having our kids stay in school and get their education. Education is essential these days in having a good life for yourself and future generations.

''Miss You Much'' is an energetic love song that has some fantastic lyrics and really gets the blood pumping. I love the spelling of ''miss'' and how well it fits into the melody line.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis really blew away the competition with their stunning production on this album. Every song has a different sound and the message comes through loud and clear. This album managed to be political, controversial and just plain fun to listen to all at once.

I highly recommend this album to fans of Janet Jackson and fans of music in general. I would have to say this is one of the best albums of the 80's period.
