Kaante, was not a bad movie(of course except for the songs, and the so called stylish walk that the hindi R Dogs take). But after watching Reservoir dogs, I get a feeling that the Hindi film industry has to grow/mature well

Reservoir dogs is a movie about a "JOB", which is to steal a batch of diamonds that is reaching a wholesale diamond merchant. The following are the givens for the job

  1. There are 6 cons who will be doing the job

  2. each of these cons is from a different backgound and different geographic area

  3. None of the cons are supposed to use their christian names, but are assigned a color as the name(mr. black, Mr. white etc)

  4. The only common link for the cons is a don who fixes the job

Following are the surprises(or something)

  1. One of the 6 cons is a cop, no one knows who it is

  2. The cops are aware of the robbery and are ready for an ambush

  3. The job goes awfully wrong, however the cons succeed in escaping with the diamonds

  4. one of the Cons takes a cop as hostage and returns to the base location

  5. one of the Cons gets shot in the abdomen area and is taken back to the base location

If I was a student in a film institute in India and was asked to make a movie out of this, I would have thought about making a movie where the anti-heros are made heros and would have ended up showing them as messiahs of poor and down-trodden people.

Give the above to tarantino and he made reservoir dogs.:). The movie commences with Tim roth(orange) being driven to base location by Harvey keitel(white), with Orange heavily bleeding. They reach the base location and within few minutes Mr Pink(steve buescemi) joining them. Mr Pink declares that the job was fixed, i.e. setup and that there is a Rat(mole/spy) within the group of cons who carried out the job. In typical tarantino style a lengthy conversation ensues, which is interrupted by introductions to the background of Mr. White and Mr. Pink. Mr. Blonde(mic madsen/ one of tarantino's regulars) joins them. What follows is another lengthy conversation, where white accuses blonde of being a psycho(blonde open fires on general public when the shootout happened). Everything settles down when blonde declares that he has one of the cops as hostage, brings the cop to the warehouse(base location), and the three of them start beating him up, all this while mr Orange is lying, slowly dying out of blood loss.

White and Pink leave to fetch the diamonds, while blonde gets ready to prove that he in fact is a psycho. He beats the police office black and blue, tapes him with a duct tape, and uses few creative methods of torture(watch it to feel the pain). Ultimately he pourse gasoline on the cop and prepares to burn him when.

Watch the movie to know more. Best part is neither the heist nor the shootout is shown in the movie saving 10-15 minutes in the movie. Something, again, which makes tarantino movies so crisp and happening

A movie that can finish even before it begins, in terms of its story, has been made into a full length feature by tarantino. The movie, like all other tarantino movies, features lengthy conversations filled with loads of F words. Sometimes it really surprises me the type of conversations that tarantino includes in his script(one in the restaurant where all of the cons discuss on the correctness of tipping, was classical). Tarantinos portrayal of violence has always been suggestive and not gory(though he likes the blood to be seen in litres), this movie is no exception. Watch how mr blonde tortures the cop to understand this. Needless to say that the cast performed exceptionally well.

Ever wondered where vishal bharadwaj got inspiration to use classical songs as background score in his movies(kaminey especially), watch tarantino movies to get a hint:)

Overall, Reservoir dogs is how kaante should have been, without all the shine and glamour and of course without cliches, sentiments, melodrama and bit of overaction by the cast!

Iam not against bollywood movies(loved kaminey) but just that the bollywood versions of english movies are so royally mistreated(murder-unfaithful, Chocolate-usual suspects, hum tum- harry met sally, dus- usual suspects again, luck- 13 tzameti, and so on) resulting in a movie that is neither fully faithful to its extremely successful english/international originals nor fully colorful and entertaining as our real bollywood movies are.

Ps: apologies for using this review to criticize the hindi movie industry, but having watched kaante and then reservoir dogs, I could not resist the comparison
