We have a four-room block with a kitchen, hall, and 2 bedrooms. Naturally we have four ceiling fans in four rooms. We also have a Kenstar cooler but we use it in hot summers only manly because the airflow is more focused with Cooler in spite of the motorized ventilators. Fan is like a permanent part of the house. It is inevitable like walls and roof. But unfortunately it doesn’t come with the house. You need to buy it and fix it. I should say that we are fortunate that we don’t get it with the house then we wouldn’t have got the choice to select our own fan. I don’t think Air Conditioners are much popular in average Homes. May be because of the prize and fixing problem it is somehow remained limited to the company offices and bungalows. Also I forgot to mention the electricity bill, which comes as an eye opener.

All it takes is 1000+ Rs. and you or someone else to fix the fan to the ceiling and make the electric connections. Different manufacturers of the fans are Bajaj (Don’t know bajaj fans? Well we do have a old antique piece), Orient (remember PSPO (Peak Speed Performance Output or Pyara Sa Pankha Orient Ka), Khetan (apart from Orient this one of the old companies who specialize in Fans), Usha (The one who is also famous for Polar (I hope you know it). Also there are many other local companies.

There are not many features to discuss for fans except the color, design, Air Flow system, and Peak Speed. In case of durability fans are like Pressure Cookers, unless water or something doesn’t damage the motor the working of the fan stays undisturbed. There can be a problem with wiring and other parts of the fan also but chances are very less that a fan goes out of order because of overloading. The fan has a golden ring as you can see in the picture.

Bajaj is not that heard in Fan world today. We see commercials for Khetan, Orient, Usha. I guess Bajaj is busier with motorcycles production. Anyway we have one old piece with usual 3 blades. Color of the fan was white. When we shifted from our old house to the one we are living currently it had got scratches and the old color had gone. So my father gave it for spray-painting it with brown color. I don’t know why he choose brown color that time but last year when we painted our house in Diwali last year the situated well to the interior. Minor though Color can be a factor in controlling airflow may be that’s why racecars are painted with special colors to minimize the air resistant. Also from durability point of view a good color should prevent rusting off or wearing off of the color.

The original speed regulator was a box type and there were three speed levels to select from. We can fix any type of regulator the fans but it should really make a sense. Most popular and widely used regulators today are small solid-state continuous type of regulator. I don’t know the technical name for it but it is a very small in size and can be easily fixed on the electric Switch Board. There are in all 6-8 levels to select from and the knob is continues type. If the peak speed of the fan is very high then this type of regulator gives you a wide range of speeds to select from. Old regulators have 3-4 levels so sometimes a level 1 also feels good. In winter or cold condition this could be a problem.

So one thing to look out for is a regulator. The type of regulator I mentioned comes for about 100 Rs.

The peak Speed of the fan is not so high as compared the Orient and Usha fans we have. May be it is old and the blade design is not dynamic enough to produce a good airflow in all directions. The 3 blades are very thick and broad in length. The middle rotor is also big in size. So the design is very old and conventional. But it gives a fair amount of airflow in all room. I have this fan in my room. Most amazing is it still works without making any sounds. Periodic oiling and cleaning should keep your fan free of trouble and those squeaks. The whole fan also wobbles a bit more that normal.

So for durability, low prize and good air flow this fan should do good even in those hot summer conditions.
