Since there is no space for writing review on rediff's free service, I'm writing my review here . This review has been written in the Indian Context
Perhaps the only advantage that rediffmail has over other email services is that it's massive india related site rediff.com and that it offers 1GB of storage space. Other than this, perhaps it is the most backward email service provider amongst the so called Elite sites.
The Cons
Firstly, Rediffmail cannot be customised to our needs. The no. of emails appearing in 1 page of inbox cannot be changed contrary to the popular email services. Next, the default email composer is in text and the graphics composer cannot be made the default composer. Moreover, compared to yahoo and hotmail, though they give less storage space, rediffmail is much backwards.
Secondly, Rediffmail lacks many essential features like Calendar, Briefcase, File storage etc. which are available for free in many email services.
Lastly, hotmail scans it's attachments by Macaffe, yahoo by Norton, Rediffmail by God-Knows-What. The spamshield and the virus checking is just for namesake. It is not at all effective.
The Pros
Firstly, as mentioned earlier, rediffmail gives a generous 1GB(1024MB) storage space compared to Yahoo(india)'s 6MB and Hotmail's 2MB. You just don't have to delete old emails.
Secondly, it's really lightning fast. You just click Send and your mail reaches the target. I remember sending a mail by Sify. I clicked Send on 1 day and the mail reached the next day. Also the pages takes much lesser time to load than Yahoo or Hotmail.
Thirdly, it has been there for many years and is considered Elite. The login page is rediff.com which has latest news and is a real Fun site.
Conclusion
You may use rediffmail if you are just a casual email user and emailing is not your daily chore. If you are such a person then rediffmail is a good choice. But, is you are a emailholic, then rediffmail should be your last option. Even yahoo or hotmail will be no good for you. You should then try fastmail.fm or rather wait for gmail.com to be launched.
