Triangle love stories are very common. Triangle murder mysteries are not common for bollywood. Through Red, Vikram Bhatt tries to tell a murder mystery and the villain behind it. Once the villain is established the film ends with a personal note from the director. I can die for love. I can kill for love, but I cannot be a fool in love.
During my college days, I studied a drama based on the communist v/s feudal landlords of Russia. The play's name was "The Game of Chess". When the story of Red started very much like an Ankahee II, but it progressed well and ended like the drama "The Game of Chess". The movie has shades of Ankahee and Gangster, but it is a murder mystery and it makes the movie interesting.
For every murder, there is one out of three reasons, wealth, fame and money. Neel (Aftab) is a heart patient. He is about to die. Only a donor of heart can save him. In his last minutes comes the inevitable call and he got a heart. Neel wants to know about the donor. It is Anahita (Celina Jaitely) wife of the dead person who informed the hospital and donated the heart. Neel wants to meet Anahitha but knowing that she is very lonely, follows her. Anahitha feels that her husband is not died in an accident, but killed by somebody, which she suspects none other than her close friend Ria (Amrita Arora). Anahita's husband used to be with Ria and this is the reason Anahita suspect of Ria. Now, knowing Anahita's situation, where she herself feel that Ria will send her gangster to kill her, Neel take the role of protector of love, which he fall into. See the movie for the unfolding of the red, dark and hot unfolding of a tale of love, betrayel and seduction.
As a suspense thriller, the movie succeeded in holding the suspense till the end. The three main charactors and their emotions are expressed well by the director. The audience interest is kept intact well, especially in the second half. The first half should have been little more narrative where the director didn't waste any single reel for fun. It looks like Vikram Bhatt does not believe mixing of comedy with thrillers and in a way it is good as well.
The Bhatt camp is well equipped with its technical crew and the typical Bhatt stamp is visible in this film as well. Photography, editing, sets all of good standards. One point I need to stress is that the Bhatts do an intentional dress code, very much with a Hollywood touch than of Indian. Also the selection of stars is different for Bhatt camp. When the movies are well supported by a nicely knitted script one may dare to recruit expensive stars to mint money. Hopefully Vikram Bhatt will tie up with some great stars again to make the movie more popular before its release.
Performance wise, it is Celina Jaitely who scored over the others. Her sexy and seductive look gives a look of a wild tiger, where she plays the scared girl in dark room very well too. For this time around there is no jokes from Aftab and he is here to do a serious job. He is impressive, I can say. Amrita only had less compare to the leading the pair, but she did what the script requested from her. Sushant singh as the ACP has done a decent job.
On the flip side, the motive behind the killing is perfect, where the story made by the killer is not so impressive or believable. The style of story telling in the beginning was very much like a documentary. The director only wanted to tell the story fast, but he failed to give the emotions and its connections properly with adequate time. Even now, the emotional side of the love story is not been well addressed by the director and it is an art one has to learn in personal life. When emotions play a part one cannot think intellectually. The film also shows that. Over dramatisation on the climax could have been controlled as well.
There are good scenes of suspense in the film which will take one by surprise many times. The sound technicians should be congratulated. The music of the film is ok, considering the mood of the sequences. The music well supports the story telling. The hot babes do their best to add emotion and colour to the frames. So, chill out in Red.
Overall, the movie is an average plus suspense thriller which I have to give a 3.5 out of 5.
