The review is not about the show Reality Bites but it is how sometimes reality does bite...So in that case, it is relevant to this category! All those MSians who are used to my choosing wrong categories, I assure you I tried! MS doesn’t like my product requests and I do not have the patience to wait till eternity!
Coming to the topic again: Reality bites! Yes it does and I can vouch for it now. Last Sunday, it was a reality check for me…if you are wondering why the hell I am telling you my sob story, please read again. This happened with me and can happen with you as well.
Sundays are meant to relax and waste. I decided to do that as well…by watching the idiot box. Now most of you would agree that the idiot box is the ideal time pass when you have:
No money to shop around
No friends who call you for free lunches
No energy to move out of the house because you haven’t taken a bath
Reasons unknown
So for reasons unknown, I had no options but to watch the TV. To my utter surprise, I found out that I was missing on the national news…news which was talked about, news which affected you and me (!) and news which was more important that the useless Lebanon evacuation stories…thank god I wasn’t left behind for long and I caught up with the most eagerly watched reality TV rescue operation: “Operation Prince”! It was a well shot story, with minute by minute updates, breaking news and phone calls…calls from UAE and London to save the poor child( and us) of the torture and how death has been defeated.
The final news came in the evening, Prince saved and credit went to the army, the bystanders, the viewers (?) and even Prince. Moms and Dads were relieved, news channels were happy and the “sane viewers” gave a sigh of relief too! After all, they were trying to figure out when and why “Prince” became more important than the Mumbai blasts, Srinagar killings and Venugopal!
Yesterday, another reality TV incident happened. The scene was same…not quite, but we can manage to twist it around….Me on a rickshaw, smiling away to glory at 630pm. 2 min later, me on the roads, (courtesy a wheel which decided to part ways with the rickshaw), scratched and bruised….just like Prince. I was already dreaming about the calls from UAE and Spain…praying for my health and wealth… alas! Dreams get shattered too easily…no TV team was around to get this important news and it never became the reality TV, biggest news! My popularity along with my senses…sankL
Realty TV and reality bites…they are terms which most of us can associate with. Reality TV nowadays show the human face; the face that their viewers want. Who would not be interested in seeing the contestants winning a game show, losers bitching about the fellow team members and fathers and mothers crying over their missing children during the blasts?
But sometimes, the stark reality bites and you just want to face the other way. The Prince saga, the Radha episode, the sting operations etc are those realities which do not affect you and me perse. They are human stories but they are not stories which have an international appeal or make life change. News matter to one and all but not at the cost of value…you can’t in the name of Reality TV and breaking news telecast a love affair which is not of importance when compared to a story which is of national importance such as G8!
For me these reality TV news channels bite and snap. They make a fool out of me each time they say the golden words: “Breaking News”. Time to tell them: get real folks…give us news and not stories!
This is another of my late night reviews…which speaks volumes of my worthlessness during nights! I am sure, there would be comments and ratings…all are welcome to give a reality bite on this and may be…you would become a breaking news!
