The outsider's views... on rating reviews. Review on Rating Reviews on MouthShut

Boredom is an awesome thing. It makes you do strange things like watching flies fly and paint peel. It also inspires you to write reviews which you wouldn’t have written otherwise (which is one of the key factors behind this review too). Speaking of inspirations, I firmly believe in them. We all need to be inspired. We need that extra push... that little pat on the back or kind word.

And there are many reviewers in here who draw inspiration from the ratings they get...

Now ratings are as wierd as they come. It’s pretty hard to rate things on a scale of 1-10. Its even harder to rate things as VU, U, SU and NU. A compass has North, East, West, South... and then you can fine tune it by using North East, South West and so on... you can drill down until you get some clarity. Can a review be a Very Useful - Useful or a Somewhat Useful-Not Useful?

Am going to break this review down into two sections now... one based on people who rate... and the other... well read on..

REVIEW RATERS

Review raters (HomoSapien Ratus) are a breed that has several subspecies viz:

HomoSapien Ratus Fairus- this is the lot that actually reads reviews, understands what’s written, shows some tolerance to bad grammar and English, makes a judgement based on the value factor of the review and finally issues a rating that is the closest to being fair.

HomoSapien Pompus Egotisticus - this lot doesn’t care much about the contents of the review or its value factor. They just want to read a few lines and find as many faults as possible. Once that’s achieved, they smack an SU or an NU and then write a comment that even their school teachers wouldn’t understand.

HomoSapien Notus Usefulus - this breed didn’t go to school the day they taught words like Very Useful, Useful or Somewhat Useful. They hit the only option they know.

HomoSapien Mywayus orhighwayus -this lot is pretty good when they write. But when they read, they want everything to be the way they want it. Its My Way or the Highway. These raters find the SU and NU buttons VU (Very Useful)

HomoSapien Confusus - this lot has no clue what reviews are.

HomoSapien Ratus Wrongus - These folks never get their ratings write.

HomoSapien Fanclubus - Rate their preferred writers high all the time and everyone else, low.

This list seems to be getting too long so before I end up annoying someone (if that hasn’t happened already)... will move on to section 2...

THE REVIEW RATERS BIBLE

Exclude reviews that exhibit views such as racism and other anti-humanity jive

Exclude reviews that exhibit extremely low IQ levels

Read a review end to end, form an honest judgement and hit a rating that you deem fit. If you can be fair to others, then others will be fair too.

Bottom line.... there is no Review Raters Bible. To each his own.
