Writing is not enough.
Aug 14, 2001 12:42 PM 7863 Views

You have written an excellent review but then thats not enough. You have got to rate your peers' reviews. Why ?

Rating reviews is a process to get to know your friends and their writing and appreciating what they have written. It is an ongoing circle. You will get true appreciation from your friends if you read and rate their writing too instead of just writing.

How would I rate reviews ?

Well to begin with, rating can be somewhat biased but I guess one can allow that. You have the liberty to like some writer's style and dislike or not care for someonelse's.

But you must be honest when you rate. If you dislike somebody's review, you can ignore the review.

Personally, I like a review which is well written and has enough information to capture your interest on a subject.

Comment it !!

I think your rating makes more sense when you put comments ( not of the abusive sort) and encourage the writer to improve without sounding condescending. Comments help a lot and it also builds a bond with the other writers which also shows that you care. :):)Comments add a personal touch to your rating.

Why ''HR'' ?

I think the majority of the writers in MS write very fine reviews and its a pleasure to read them. I try to give an HR to almost everyone :):) except for a few.

My idea of a HR review is content, information, english and then style and it does follow this order.

This is not an english forum but it much more a consumer's

experience and their opinion work at helping you make a decision. Yes it does help when the English is correct but what I look for is information about a product. And one's personal experience. Your opinions matter as MS says. :):)

Why ''R''

Well I usually give this rating when there is just enough information about a product without any formatting or style. Sometimes its just ranting about a product. Well we sympathise but we surely would like to know more about the product instead of unnecessary details.

For example, if its about a movie, I would at least like to know something about the story , how the story was , was it interesting... was it worth your money... what type of movie it is and if you can write something about the technical aspect then its an added bonus but then that is not of great priority... What matters is that what you felt when you watched the movie..

A recommended rating from me means that you have a lot of room for improving on giving us details about a product and you have a great start on your reviews.

Why ''SR''

This is a rating which I give to reviews which are just three lines and well no substance. The writing is there just for the sake of it. As regards information about the product its NIL. This information is available over the net anyway.

Why ''NR''

Well this is a rating which is used very rarely by me. This rating is reserved for reviews when the content is totally out of context, rude and abusive language, slandering other's names, other's writing style, personal abuse, etc.

I definitely do not encourage these reviews and I do not hesitate to give an NR.

Its personal

But whatever said and done rating reviews is very personal and yes biased or not it is one's own choice. Theres is no two or three ways of rating a review. Either you like a review or not, it all depends on your personal opinion.

But what is not personal about rating is that one makes a lot of friends and your community also grows when you read and rate reviews which will be reciprocated by your readers.

And last but not the least, let me not forget to mention the points, though I do not know when and how we can redeem our points. :):). So doubts aside. Do keep rating and reading but hey not only for the MS points but for widening your community.

And when a new writer is dabbling in MS do encourage the writer with your comments and suggestions.
