Review on reviewing !!!

I thought I might chip in with my points .ahem.on how to rate a review. I agree I am a novice, but I can say proudly that I have learnt a lot on how to write and how to rate a review as well.

First of all, the platform. I would sincerely like to thank the team at mouthshut for giving us a virtual stage with a real life audience!

The best part of this is that even the most introvert person can write a review. It gives him/her a sense of satisfaction that there are people out there who take time to read reviews and even take a little more time to rate them.

Writing a review is both tough and easy. Why I am mentioning the points on how to write a review, so that people who rate them might consider these above points as benchmarks or parameters. Mouthshut gives us a wide domain to chose from, in terms of topics or products. There is little room for telling the reason that' the product on which I wanted to write a review is not categorised, so I am not writing' but there is room. People who say the above reason, are out of their minds. When you write reviews, you don't necessary have to reveal your true identity or any other personal details.

Now, on how to rate a review. Remember we are not experts at rating reviews, but who is?(ITS A TOUGH JOB BUT SOMEONE'S GOT TO DO IT), no offence raters, u all are doing a good job, so stay focusssed and keep it up.

Most of us are not born with oodles of cash to spare so we dont get to buy new products in the market, like a new cell phone every month, or a new bike or a new harddisk at regular intervals, or any other product for that matter. Most of all reviews are based on first hand experience on a product that a known person, say a good pal or a family member owns.

Look at a review well and read it even better. Dont be intimated by the size of it or the font sizing. I know many are, but hats off to raters who are not. The first part shud contain a brief description of the product under consideration, like whether it had any history or was there a defect in the earlier model that nessesitated the release of the new model and whether those defects have been rectified.

Of course, you cant apply the above'principle' everywhere. A new phone released might not have an earlier version, it might be the first of its kind!

How does the product appeal to u? This is another major criteria for rating. If you are not a movie buff, then why rate a movie review? I am not saying u dont, but if u do, read the review properly and then give ur rating. Most readers rate reviews because u get that extra point. This way you are giving the author a false sense of belief that he is doing a good job and he wll continue to churn out bad reviews! You can, in fact, point out the errors in his/her review and hope for the best. I am sure the author will oblige.

Back to how the product appeals to you. Look at the review from every angle. Are all necessary details furnished exactly? For example, a movie review might contain the release date, the cast and crew and maybe even the directors film making history. It is a hopeless one if the author wrote on how he felt in the theatre while watching it. An electonic item's review might also contain the release date, the price, the features offered and maybe even a comparison with a similar product that offers the same features for a lot less!.like I said.maybe.u can even add a few extra points if u like.

Last but not the least, the intention counts. Is the author writing a review just to increase his review count and increase the MS points they have. One good thing to note is that almost all, why, I dare say all, members of mouthshut dont do it. Hats off to u members again, for coming up with lovely original reviews and that too with a good intention of letting the world know though the virtual speech which you put in your reviews. One more thing, reviews should be based on personal experience to an extent only, but should dwelve more on how the common consumer will benefit from it.

Try to be original. Dont just copy and paste reviews from websites that come up when you type'product name' and'review' on google. Of course, use the world wide web to gather a few specifications or any other detail. But dont copy, be original. Again, hats off to all authors who are original.

We can be a jack off all trades, but a King of none.

By the way, I am running out of hats.

Readers, kindly rate this review as you see fit and do post your comments. I would greatly appreciate constructive criticism. It brings out the better writer in me.
