This is probably the best time to release political satires and caricature movies, as many controversies spice up the assembly election season in Kerala. The recent releases ‘Lion’ starring Dileep and the Suresh Gopi starrer ‘Rashtram’ got good positive initial response from the audience. While ‘Lion’ was a usual Dileep- masala fare with gimmicks made for the women audience, the latter is aggressive, short and racy.
“Rashtram” (The Nation)
Language : Malayalam
Director : Anil C. Menon
Script : Sajeevan
Music : Deepak Dev
Produced by Carlton Films.
Cast : Suresh Gopi, Madhu, Tilakan, Sai Kumar, Janarddanan, Nedumudi Venu, Vijayaraghavan, KPAC Lalita, Laya , T.P. Madhavan ,Suresh Krishna etc.
Plot
It is based on many real political incidents took place in the last five years in Kerala starting from the drug-scam to the splits in various parties. It is really interesting to watch the caricatures of many infamous politicians and businessmen on screen !
Suresh Gopiplays Thomas Joseph –alias- Thommy , son of veteran politician Ouseppachan (Madhu) . The rival factions within the ruling party cause many problems and it eventually leads to the death of the Chief Minister (Nedumudi Venu) . In an unexpected turnaround, Thommy becomes the Chief Minister of the state! Now the story turns into how the rivals within his party try to destroy him and the way he wins the hearts of the people before the by-election.
Performances
This is One of the most star-studded films released recently. Veterans like Madhu,Tilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Janarddanan, Sai Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, T.P. Madhavan and KPAC Lalita ….delivered superb performances along with Suresh Gopi's skilful acting. The only average actor in the film is Suresh Krishna.
Script and Direction
Anil Menon and Sajeevan are no match for Shaji Kailas - Ranji Panikkar duo … even then ,the dialogues and scenes of ‘Rashtram’ are sharp , sensible and have the Suresh Gopi charm ! This team can do wonders in the future! However, the climax dialogue between the hero and villain is really theatrical and irritating. Nevertheless, it will not let you down as the film has many interesting parts before that.
Music
The background score by S.P. Venkitesh is Ok. The wedding anniversary of Madhu and Lalita is shown as a song sequence and the composition by Deepak Dev is melodious.
So….
If you want a tough, racy political thriller …Rashtram is the pick of the season.
