After producing various duds & directing the unknown Agyaat, RGV announces his supremacy in film making yet again with the hard hitting & gritty RANN, which can easily be counted among the category of Satya, Company, Sarkar, etc.

The film doesn’t contain anything that we haven’t seen, read or heard before but RGV narrates the familiar story in his own style, which makes the film a must see for all & does raises a question, ‘can RGV really be written off?’

In this cut throat competitive world don’t we all want to succeed? Whether success is achieved ‘by hook or crook’ or ‘on your own hook’ the bottom line remains the same – SUCCESS.

With RANN, RGV dares to hit the TRP obsessed TV media and successfully unmasks the game they play to earn TRPs, the way things are portrayed, etc in a very interesting & gripping manner.

The film is about the TV media, where Mr. Amitabh Bachchan runs a channel, which broadcasts news & only news, where as their rival channel run by Mohnish Behl wants to sell anything & everything, ethical or unethical, doesn’t matter to him. At the end of the day, the latter’s TRP is better then the former & that’s what counts.

Ritesh Deshmukh who is Mr. Bachchan’s fan because of latter’s principles, joins his office. He is a man who believes that he can change the world.

Mr. Bachchan’s ambitious son Sudeep in an attempt to increase the TRP of his channel falls for a trap laid by his brother-in-law Rajat Kapoor in association with Paresh Rawal who wants to be the next Prime Minister.

The aftermath of this combination topples the government & laid the foundation for the next election. Stage is set for Paresh Rawal’s dream to come true but unfortunately all is not well this time.

The strength of the film lies in its writing & execution of the material by talented RGV as he presented the film like a taut thriller, with some nail biting moments. Right from the word go he meant business & till the last scene he didn’t loose focus.

The opening sequence, the character of Suchitra Krishnamurthy, minimum yet significant screen presence of Big B, the quiet lips & talking eyes of Ritesh Deshmukh, the sting operation, the loophole in the best laid plan, the murder, the aftermath and many other scenes in the film are live examples of a masterpiece cinema.

RGV also deserves a pat on his back for approving the songs, which are not foot tapping but does push the story forward & also for extracting top notch performances from the entire star cast.

Rajat Kapoor continues to perform well. It was nice to see Suchitra again after a long time & she does a good job. Gul Panang looks good.

Paresh Rawal who started his career as a villain returns to his old character & is flawless. Watch him threatening Sudeep, “agar imaandari hamse haath milane se rokey to apni zubaan bhi rok lena, aakhir hum Mohan Pandey aisey hi nahin hain” it send shiver up your spine.

Sudeep is here to stay, at least as an actor & delivers a top class performance.

Mohnish Behl makes a confident comeback & should thank RGV for the chance given to him.

Ritesh Deshmuk takes a giant leap forward as an actor, because his role has minimum of dialogues but his eyes has to talk a lot & he didn’t let RGV’s confidence down. Remarkable act.

RANN is incomplete without the character of Big B, who tries to define MEDIA & prefers to walk on a tight rope tied on the hooks of honesty, fighting this RANN for the last 25 years but couldn’t win.

Watch him giving the speech in the grand finale, the way he talks, the way he takes pause & continues with moist eyes, his body language – everything immaculate. His performance tells you what differs a man from the boys.

It is an honest attempt by the makers, which we all must watch otherwise it would be as if only the makers are interested in the RANN against unethical things. But then everybody is free to take his/her decision.

Whatever said & done RANN is a spellbinding experience.
