I went to Nandini Theatre in Mahalaxmi Layout (Bangalore) on Friday at 8 pm (It was second show on first day). Theatre was literally empty. The whole crowd was less than 50 for a theatre capacity of 300+.

Bought a second class ticket for Rs 50 and sat in the middle. I hate people sitting in front of me and disturbing. And balcony is the wrong place to enjoy the movie.

As the movie started, I started getting irritated, too much camera movement, with all weird angles. This part of the movie is suppose to be for character development. But excuse me! why is the camera giving me headache when I want to focus on character. Too loud background music. I really wanted to getup and leave. But I waited. Glad I waited. Exactly around 21 mins after start, camera stood still, no more silly movements, no more weird angles. That's when the script and cast took over. Best movements from Bachan is when he is silent in the movie, his expression at various moments in the movie convey so much in his stillness.

One of the few indian movies which has rightly and correctly used silence and pauses (well most of today's indian movies do not understand pause and silence). Bachan's character is subtle and not over the top. Various other loud characters play wonderfully off him. Our Kannada hero Sudeep has done a good job. In the initial scenes with Bachan, he doesn't stand confident, but in later scenes he has stood his ground in front of Bachan. This must be one of the or the only best role Deshmukh has played. You cannot even recognize him, he is so hidden in his character. I had to wait for end credits to confirm that he really was Deshmukh.

For some reason, all the older characters and male characters seem too low on face brush-ups (make up). And all the young female characters have too much make up - that it looks awful.

I am not going to go into detail about the story or the plot. Its one of the few good Indian movies recently (story wise this is as good as New York), its tight. Performance is good - there is no masala - there are no songs or item numbers, there are very few or non existent unnecessary scenes. If you get over the irritation of the first 21 mins, its a very decent movie. Its intelligent and treats us the audience intelligently. There is no suspense or climax as such, but your stomach churns as the plot twists and turns and you just wait for the inevitable to unfold. Its like watching a train wreck unfold.

Its easy to get tickets and there are no crowds. You can actually enjoy the movie.
