Vande-Mataram : What does this mean to our current techno-savvy generation of India. A melodious song sung by Rehman, a term read in books of history, something heard in movies on freedom fighters. Something, which perhaps connotes patriotism. And what does patriotism mean… or this word got obsolete and redundant after 15th Aug 1947! Yes.. I know, this word is still alive in the hearts of Soldiers ready to sacrifice their life on their motherland. But for what… Very beautifully, Director has captured this sentiment and forces us to think and find out an answer. (Will discuss it in detail in POST-MORTEM)

Alice Pattern (Sue) is a film maker. She has been fascinated by diary of her grandfather who served British Police Force during Indian Freedom Struggle. His diary talks about bravado of various freedom fighters and incidents related to them. To realise her dream of making film on Indian freedom struggle, Alice comes to India and meets some university students. She wants to cast them as freedom fighters, but alas... they are bunch of careless jokers fascinated with westernization and don’t have even iota of patriotism.

For a seasoned actor like AMIR KHAN, this role wasn’t a tough challenge… After performing character of MANGAL PANDEY, this was a cakewalk. He is always a master in blending serious aggression with mischief.

New comers like Alice, Kunal and Sidhaarth have given a clap worthy performance. Atul Kulkarni has already proved his acting skills in CHANDINI BAAR, DUM and PAGE3. Sharman Joshi tickles audience enough with his STYLE kind off gags. Though, both of them are getting type-casted.. shud try some change. Soha ali Khan was pathetic.. hope she improves with time. Madhavan’s role was pretty small, though very effective.

It’s better that I don’t try to comment on acting skills of senior actors like Om Puri , Agashe and others. I am not qualified enough for this arduous task J

When the reins of music is in hands of A.R. Rehman… Producers can be rest assured on this front. Bouquet of chartbusters with great variety… from fun filled Pathshala, Khalbali, Rubaroo – TO- Josh full Rang de basanti, Lalkaar –TO- Soothing Ik onkaar, khoon chala, tu bin bataye.

Songs of Rehman in RDB will make you cry.. in first half of Laughter.. and in second half of Pain.

AFTER THOUGHTS…

Shaheedon ki chitaon par har baras langenge mele,

Vatan pe mitnein walon ka yahi namo nishaan hoga...

Over last forty years… Indian AirForce has lost couple of UNFORTUNATE fighter pilots in MIG 21(Flying coffins) crashes. No.. they were never afraid of death.. But, perhaps they won’t feel proud to sacrifice their life on technical dysfunctionalities of MIG junk and cost cutting drive of our Government.

Thousands of soldiers sacrificed their life in 1971 Indo-pak war and 1999 Kargil war to capture enemy posts and save their borders. Finally, Government intervenes.. signs a SHIMLA AGREEMENT to UNDO changes in new border line as a result of war. But, what about doing an UNDO to death of those martyrs??? Oh… for them we have got some medals.. PVC.. VC.. etc. Yes, those medals will surely take care of their family responsibilities. There was a beautiful movie made on this: DHOOP, which shows struggle of a father, running after Govt for compensation of loss of their son. Let’s leave aside Soldiers for the time being… he knows that his family has to sacrifice their happiness after his death. But, for him his DUTY is more important. Let’s hope, that day doesn’t come when a soldier in battle filed gets caught into dilemma of : Shud I or Shudn’t I.

WARNING : Some climax scenes revealed ahead. Continue reading at your own risk..

POST-MORTEM

A wonderful and different movie made by Rakesh Mehra, which shows the transformation of a careless youth into a much matured aggressive patriots. EDITING work was truly clapworthy.. the way two different stories ran in parallel and finally it integrated. In first half, frequent switches between the two stories gets a little irritating; audience fails to understand what director wants to say? But in second half.. after the tragic accident.. when the same story gets replayed in present scenario.. one appreciates the logic.

Extreme step taken by students looks exaggerated and highly unpractical on face value. But, if we see it as a symbolisation of realising one’s potential.. it is highly motivating. In the first half, students were making mockery of a few lines in script. But, circumstances changed them so much that same lines were coming out of their heart later on. It shows a drastic change in personality of characters, their thinking process, passion and finding a motive in life that is LARGER THAN LIFE itself. Rang de Basanti inspires us to find out that ultimate objective in our life… which gives us the direction… after which the path of life is no more hazy… THE GOAL…which is important than life and death.

But still the big question is on PATRIOTISM remains..? How can we become patriotic? Shud we all join Defense/Police/Politics??? Or kill all the corrupt politicians of country… will that solve the root problem. Perhaps not… Then what to do…

Frankly speaking we don’t have to do much.. Just let us do our work with full energy and conviction, so that we are a part of efficient, energetic and educated work force that’ll drive the economy of our country. In future, war won’t be fought with manpower and ammunition, but with ECONOMIC POWER and financial muscles. To devastate the economy of your enemy that they are devoid of food, leave aside ammunition.

Let us have confidence in ourselves.. in our generation.. our country. Even if we can’t do much, Can we at least just LOVE our country. Or at least for God sake…not feel ashamed to be called as Indians!!! With the rate our currency is appreciating … our sensex is rising… our technocrats of IITs and managers of IIMs are ruling the world… INDIA is bound to SHINE. The way we are crazy for our Indian Cricket Team.. let’s get crazy for TEAM INDIA.

I would like to refer a speech delivered by our President APJ Abdul Kalam in Hyderabad. Read it to know why you should be proud of being an Indian. MUST READ FOR EVERY INDIAN.

Would like to conclude with my favourite lines:

Yunan Mistra Romaa sab mit gaye jahan se…

Kuch baat hai ke hasti mitati nahin hamari…

Sadiyon raha hai dushman daure jamaa hamara…

Baki magar hai ab tak namo nishaan hamara.. JAI HIND
