Rang de basanti - a generation weakens!. Review on Rang De Basanti

(Guys - please check HT Style dated 28 Jan 2006 - due credit has not been given to the real life sufferers from whose lives, the story is inspired)

The story goes like this:

There is a female called 'Sue' who intends making a movie on the Indian patriots of yesteryears and Soha Ali Khan - her friend takes this forward. In Aamir Khan and his friends, Su finds the right characters who would portray the famed patriots. Once everyone gets into teh character, their indifference towards the nation turns into concern and when one of their dear friends- Madhavan (a pilot) gets killed owing to cheap, low-quality parts of the aircraft, his erstwhile 'good-for-nothing' friends take the revenge not by anything else- but by violence

The problem about the movie-

Often, such movies (Satya, Inqualab etc) tend to justify the meaningless violent acts that their leading men indulge in. Is this the awakening of a generation? No- certainly not. Bhagat Singh had a motto, a goal - that was freedom. The characters in this movie just wanted to find an excuse to indulge in violence. Agreed- their innocent friend got killed for no fault of his. But the real problem is not corruption- it is high ambition. Today, no one wants to lead a simple life. Especially not the politicians. When power and desire join, ethics vanish.

Need to address a bigger issue

The bigger issue in today's times is that of rising ambitions. People are so sure of the pay package they want and the kind of life they wanna lead - but no one seems sure about the kind of work and contribution they would like to make

A bad example for youngsters

The movie sets a bad example for youngsters. Along with the characteristic pay scales of BPOs, today's generation will also want to break the law, take law in their own hands etc.

Aamir Khan drinks, his friends smoke, - all that is fine- is this the generation awakening? Certainly not-

Shikhar -a better movie than Rangde Basanti - even Swades was better-

The reasons are many. Swades didn't include masala elements or dirty dialogues in order to connect to the polluted audience. A certain review of the movie Rang De basanti says that Swades was preachy. Well the fact is that today, there is no place for absolute goodness in the minds of materialistic people. Swades is a class movie. Even Shikhar was accused of showing 'good' and 'bad' characters and not including grey. Well when a message needs to be given- goodness that is absolute should be shown.

The movie will be liked by most

I am sure the movie will be liked by most - because of its masala elements- because of the senseless violence shown- because of the message just forming not more than 20 minutes of the movie -because of the cheap language and dialogues included- yes today's youth wants all this - they wanna do all the forbidden things and yet be seen as great men

It's indeed shameful that Bhagat Singh has been compared to ordinary mortals with hardly any virtues

A big let down - Swades and Shikhar drove home the message better and were not liked because somewhere, the Indian audience has fallen to temptations of materialistic life and unnecessary display of wealth and power.!

A powerful reaction would have been to create blogs, to use media etc.

Isn't the pen mightier than the sword? Or we just write it and then forget it?

Anyways, the good souls never want others to fight for them- their goodness is their power- forgiveness is their power - not violence and murders.

The technical strength of the movie is there- good songs, good performances too but the message is the mess. Such awakening is not needed - today more simplicity and more virtues are needed for already weak young generation who run after the penny and indulge in unnecessary show business

Wearing the garb of patriotism is the worst thing.
