“Hum logo ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani Jitni bhi ulti seedhi ho, apni yahi kahaani”

When I watched ‘Rang de’ for the first time I felt exactly like this. An ulta seedha kahani that’s what it felt like until I laid back and thought about it. Have things really changed years later after independence? Not really…There are still tormenters and the tormented… Only their faces have changed with time. Injustice and exploitation are still at large, so what the British has left. Take for example the Jessica Lal case. The verdict is out and the killer goes scot free What do you do amidst such circumstances. Do you wait patiently or take up arms in your hands as the 7 youths did in ‘Rang de’? Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), DJ (Aamir Khan), Karan (Siddharth), Sukhi (Sharman Joshi), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor),Laxman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni) are characters from different backgrounds who come together for a common cause. Rakeysh Mehra has these parallel elements in his movies, something which is sinister, dark enticing…like chocolate?? I simply loved the parallel story of the freedom fighters like Azad and Bhagat Singh that gave a superb support to the main plot. Particularly the scene where they take up the ultimate decision: ‘Mar dalo’ The juxtaposition showed evidence of hard work. An angrez narrator was not something new, like Sue we had Catherine in Ghai’s ‘Kisna’ but Sue is different… Sue watches the transformation of the happy go lucky youths into passionate extremists. Realising what they are upto, she tries to rescue them but its too late. AR Rahman’s music is again apt and I particularly like…” Rubaroo” The movie seems like a lyric in motion with Binod Pradhan’s cinematography. We have seen many nationalistic movies but rarely do we see them as obscure and hard hitting as this. Considering our extremist freedom fighters or the fast thinking passionate modern youth, ‘Rang de’ will make you think. This movie reminded me of a 1999 release “Hu tu tu”…did you too?
