Good Attempt. Review on Rang De Basanti

The film starts with dialogue “Tumharey maa key ankh” and ends on “Behen ka takka”. Though a good try making it a blend of humor, romance, drama, and action, but all and all the film got mixed reactions not only from the class but also from all over the world.

The movie at time seems that it is another “time-line” movie depicting pre-independence periods but actually its not. Thought comparison of the on goings have been done as the director try to draws parallels between Indians ruled by the British and Indians ruled by corrupt politicians today. The scene goes back and forth into both the eras sometimes leaving the audience confused at times. The film runs on two plots one is about the life of 5 friends who live in their “Mast” world in their care free style. The second plot is about the sacrifices made in the pre-independence era by Indian legends such as “Bhagat Singh”.

The film starts by showing the execution of Bhagat singh which is recorded by an England army officer in his personal diary which some how makes its way to his grand daughter. She gets pretty inspired by it and wants to make a documentary on it but unfortunately can’t find enough funds in London so she decided to try her luck in India. Here she meets the group of university students who are fit for the documentary, but the group itself is reluctant to perform but then somehow agrees. And during the production of the documentary they develop sense of responsibility towards the country. In end middle one of there friend dies in a plane crash due to second hand parts. The responsibility is not taken by the Defense minister and the group of friends decided to assassinate him. In the finale they friends take over the radio station and confess that they killed the minister and tell the reason for taking such and action against the government and then they are gunned down by commandos. This diluted the whole movie in sense that it ran on very unconventional style but very effective and ended on very “conventional way” in which the all heroes die happily.

From the outer surface, the movie may appear like another film on the “fight against the system”. But it looks at the scenario from the point of view of the present generation youth who has lost all hopes for any improvement. So the approach is more realistic than being overemotionally filmi, to which the audience can relate with. So to end, a good attempt to capture audience both with the emotions but also with some bold but well executed jokes and dialogues/words.
