I know what all of you will be thinking. Another review on Rang De Basanti? No!!

Well, I saw the movie a couple of weeks back and loved it. However, it was only when I sat down to reflect on it did I realise the true genius of the director. The movie ROCKS. No two ways about that.

SCRIPT & STORY

This is one Aamir Khan movie that does not sell only because of his presence. Clearly, the script is the boss here and Aamir Khan or no Aamir Khan this movie would have been a hit.

The movie revolves around a bunch of teenaged friends who are carefree and aimless in life. Diljeet (DJ), a character played by Aamir Khan, has passd out of the university a few years back but still does not want to leave the campus because he does not want to face the harsh life outside. The others too are in similar predicaments. But when a foreign filmmaker (Alice Patten) arrives in India to make a documentary about Indian freedom fighters like Azad, Bismil and Bhagat Singh. When she arrives in India, she is disiillusioned by the attitude of India's youth. But somehow, she manages to coax them into working in her documentary as lead actors.

Initially, this bunch of buddies struggle to relate to the nationalistic and patriotic ideas of the martyrs. But when one of their friends dies in a MiG ''accident'', their conscience is stirred. They realise that even though the British have left India, Indians are still slaves. These young guys try to expose this truth to the public and end up making the ultimate sacrifice......

You will have to watch the movie to know the rest of it since I do not want to reveal the entire screen-play. That will totally destroy the suspense and curiosity.......

THE DIRECTOR AND HIS ACTORS

Rakyesh Mehra, making his second movie, has done a splendid job. The clarity of his vision means that the screenplay is splendid and flawless. Capturing the spirit of India's young generation is no easy task but the director has managed to potray it nicely.

Sharman Joshi,Kulkarni, Aamir Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan and even British dame Alice Patten have churned out good performances. After Rakesh Roshan saw this movie he proclaimed that Aamir Khan is the best actor in the country today. Soha Ali Khan does justice to her role while Madhavan and Wahida Rehman make special appearences in the film.

The intensity in the eyes of Aamir Khan and Sharman Joshi is clearly visible as they convert the director's dreams into reality frame after frame.

MUSIC

AR Rehman has once again turned out a score that will remain alive even after the movie is out of cinemas. Paathshaala and Roobaroo are awesome and soul-stirring. Another important feature is that the movie never stops even during the songs. The songs could well have been a background score. Not that it is a bad thing, of course.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM

The movie is not flawless. It propagates violence in some parts and the ending is a tad too different. Especially the way Kulkarni and Kapoor die...... But the movie has more pros than cons so you should see it. Still reading this!! Leave for the nearest cinema hall now!!
