Aye saala!

Abhi Abhi

Hua Yakinn

Ke Aag hai mujhme kahin

Hoi Subah

Main Chal gaya

Sooraj hoon main nikal gaya….

It is the morning of 26 January. Trust me it is one of the most beautiful mornings I have ever woken up to in Delhi. The sun is shining and the sky is clear. I hear helicopters hovering somewhere nearby. The first thing I do is play the above song and karaoke along….

Rubarooooo Roshni

Rubarooooo Roshni

If in case you guys reading this are wondering why…? Simply because Rubaroo is a charged up song and I really like it. Moreover, I actually had not reached a satiation point singing the same song from the previous night.

Rubaroo comes to an end and I switch to radio. The Big Bazaar guys have announced a maha sale. I wonder how come these guys are open on a national holiday! (seriously…!!! Spare some thought yaar)

A little later the three of us are ready and heading towards Greater Noida expressway. We cross Dhaula Kuan and though the traffic is not much (hardly any) police presence is heavy. Along the way at almost all traffic lights I come across kids selling the national flag. At one of the intersections a big car (I believe it was Tuscon, I am not sure) stops by our side and the smallest of all child (she could not even reach the window) extends her hand and says, ‘baboo ji lelo’. Most of the other kids did not even make an attempt to sell the patriotic stuff, probably because experience had taught them about who would be a prospective buyer. This little child was successful. The young lady on the passenger side rolled down her windows and bought the flag. And just when we started moving ahead I could see the gentleman adjusting the flag on the dashboard and a sense of pride flashed on his face. This particular scene remains embedded in my mind.

Dhuaan Chatta, Khulla Gagan mera

Nayi dagar, naya safar mera

We enter the expressway and their ain’t a any other vehicle in the vicinity. Looks like we are the only ones out. I am sitting on the back seat and screaming out loud with AR Rahman. My dad is irked but I know he secretly likes it when I freak out. But this time he really was. So I had to shut up (mostly because I sing really bad and he liked the song). But then I really could not hold it any longer and ask dad to pull over so that I could relieve myself. (nothing can beat the feeling of relieving yourself in an open highway!!!). I was in the middle of the thing when all of a sudden I heard a voice on a microphone from behind. ‘Aap log yahaan kyon ruke ho?’ I turn back to find the Expressway Patrol van slowing down. They immediately realize that we were harmless and a family going out for fun. They pass by without stopping. But I am pretty embarrassed. Never again am I going to take undue advantage of my freedom. And why should we?

I guess I have digressed a lot but I do not feel like getting started with the review. In fact I wanted to watch this movie today. But somehow I ended doing things that I did npot plan to do. And now afer having listened the album all through the 110 kilomteres of journey and witnessing umpteenth scenes on the way I am left thinking, ‘What does the republic day mean to us?’

I guess I already have begun with the review. I have not seen the movie but Rang De Basanti appears a mostly fast moving album containing songs that appear to represent and target a very youthful audience. Though I have not seen the movie yet and am creating my own impressions, few of the songs appear impulse songs and come with lyrics that sound teeangish but likeable. Take for example Pathshala (sung by Naresh Iyer and Mohamed Aslam). It contains lyrics,

Talli hone se sikhi hamne gravity

Ishq ka practical kiya

Tab aayi clarity!

Though tapori, it makes much sense. Also, the cover of the album contains a quote, ‘Live life Stop Analyzing it’. This explains it. There is a message. It reads into the minds of today’s youth. The work of the lyricist (Prasoon Joshi…is he the adman? I am not sure. Looks like he is) has to be appreciated, not just for this song but other tracks too. And talking about the lyricist it would be fair to include AR Rahman (music director) too. He has done a wonderful job with all the compositions. In fact he has lent his voice to songs like Luka Chuppi (one of the best tracks from the album), Roobaroo (I am crazy for this one), and Khalbali (a song with Arabic touch).

Altogether, there are ten songs in the album that starts with Ik Onkaar. This particular rendition is a piece from Gurbani and comes as a pleasant surprise as the opening track.

The next track is Rang De Basanti. When I heard it the first time I did not like it as it appeared a typical Daler kind of song. Then a Bengali friend told me that he liked it. So I decided not to skip this one and decided to let it play. Once I started following the lyricsi understood how beautiful the song is.

Next comes Paathshala followed by Tu Bin Bataye. This appears a slow romantic number. Like it and would not mind skipping it at all. Both singers (Madhushree and Naresh Iyer) have done a good job. Next is Khalbali.

Khoon chala is a track with deep https://lyrics. I have not been able to understand how it might have been used in the film. Probably once I have seen with the movie I would be in a better position to match the relevance. Even then it is a good track to listen.

Paathashala again makes an appearance after Khoon Chala. Luka Chuppi is the next track. It is one of the best tracks from the album. Sung by AR Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar (one of the reasons why it is so special) it appears a song where a mother is remembering her son. Beautiful number.

This brings us to the last number of the album – Rubaroo. A cool song. Looks like one of the Dil Chahta Hai number’s being transported in here. The lyric as well as the composition is great. What I like about it? The whole package I guess.

Well that brings us to the end. So should you buy Rang De Basanti. I say why not? Give me one good reason why not. In case you think you should not buy it because aamir did not invite you to the wedding then its alright and understandable, but I’ll say please come up with a better excuse. I’ll say buy it coz there is Aamir, AR Rahman, Lata, and a colour of patriotism attached in here. Go listen to RDB tracks, find the fire in you and let it burn.
