I didn't think I'd ever write about hair oil. Writing about restaurants seems to be a pastime. I tried writing about some other things and this is one more attempt to write about stuff other than food!

I have very light, thin curly hair. When I was a child, my mother used to apply oil to my hair on Sunday evenings, when my hair was completely dry after a ''head bath''. She tried different kinds of oils...plain coconut oil, oil mixed with hibiscus petals and leaves, neelibringadhi tailam and what not.

My hair remained so thin that my scalp would show when my mother braided my hair. I can't remember having had long hair as a child. I think my hair just wouldn't grow beyond a point...that point was somewhere between my ears and my shoulders. So, I'd get a ''boys' cut'' from time to time.

Then during one of our trips to Bombay, an aunt recommended Ramtirth Brahmi Oil. I was devastated. I thought...oh no...not again. I hated having oil in my hair. At that time, I had just had a boys' cut. My mother started using this oil regularly on her hair as well as on mine. The texture of this oil is like any other. It is reasonably sticky, but fortunately, it doesn't have an offensive smell.

My hair started growing very rapidly. It remained thin...but it grew longer and longer. At one point, I had braids that reached up to my shoulder blades. Then, my hair stopped growing longer and started getting thicker. It was amazing to see the thickness of my hair actually double.

I chopped my hair once more and went back to wearing it really short. And by then I was a teenager...so I thought it was wrong to be seen in public (read school) with oil in my hair. I started using a non sticky hair oil (Marico's Hair and Care) in the hope that I could have oil in my hair and yet not have it show. The oil didn't quite agree with me. And with time, I switched back to Ramtirth.

For some reason, I stopped oiling my hair regularly and my routine involved oiling my hair just before my bath. It worked quite well for me, until I moved to Hyderabad. Hyderabad has very dry weather and thanks to the new routine, my scalp started getting really dry. Worse still, I started losing hair like crazy. The thickness got reduced by half and I decided I must get back to using RBO regularly. I now use it regularly...even if it means being seen in public (read office) with oily hair.

All this while, my mother continued using Ramtirth and even now, at her age, her hair is growing thicker and longer.

My hair isn't beautiful or anything. Most times, its totally unmanageable. But at least now I'm not losing hair the way I was until recently and my hair has started growing once more.
