Another movie from Anurag Kashyap’s dark bag of criminal horror, no one said that it will NOT be gory or gruesome.

How deep can one dive to show their dark side? This flick, Raman Raghav 2.0 takes you on yet another chase but disappoints on many levels.

The opening disclaimer of the movie connects or rather disconnects the film with the infamous serial killer of 60s, who terrorized Bombay(then) and left a trail of 41 odd murders: Raman Raghav. It states “this movie is not about him” and probably about a copycat killer.

The story revolves around Ramanna(Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who brutally murders his victims using and iron car-jack to bash their skull into pieces and powder. The graphic itself gives me goose-bumps, such horrid imagination. He comes on the police radar and becomes a target, but with his skillfulness he always manages to sneak out. Raghav(Vicky Kaushal) is a cop, who has been given the charge of hunting Ramanna. The characterization of Raghav is unlike any cop that comes to your mind.

He is a drug addict with misogynist attitude and lives on take-it-or-leave-it mentality. He lives a quality time with his girlfriend Simmy(Sobhita Dhulipala), whom he can’t commit. But his cop life take turn when he accidentally kills Simmy. Meanwhile, Ramanna starts leaving a trail of bread crumbs to satisfy his psychological character or rather just tease Raghav. Not long after this, a complicated mystery begins to unravel.

The film portrays that both, Ramanna and Raghav are creates bred and brought in patriarchial way, and does that misogyny never ceases to uproar at times. That’s why, how strong-willed the woman be, they got the worst end of the stick everytime, be Ramanna or Raghav’s girl.

This brings me to sequence that clearly stands out, where Ramanna visits his sister Lakshmi(Amruta Subhash) and holds them hostage. The way his shows his sick mind in the squeamish manner and massacres everyone in his rage, followed by chicken curry feast and the amazing dynamite song Behooda playing aptly in the background. Varun Grover’s lyrics say Tere khall mein rainge keede, tu sachcha behooda anf Ram Sampath hands down music score just makes the scene soooo viable.

As I am talking about Nawazuddin, let’s get down to his performance. He his master of his craft(hailing him, literally). He has become a typecast who can dawn any tough character. I can’t forget the look in his eye when he is mentioning, correction, confessing his act of killing people with the utmost honesty. The manner he uses his vintage red sunglasses, puffing cigarettes and making rings. The most commendable part of his talent is, how he sinks in and swims out of his crazy character. Applauds all over. His single performance is joy to watch, in. Every. Single. Frame.

Vicky Kaushal, gained his glory after his acting in Masaan, deserves standing ovation for his performance. He characteristically pulled off the role of badass drug addict cop with flamboyance. Sobhita Dhulipala has made her debut in Bollywood through this movie, and her acting skills are praise worthy.

Raman Raghav 2.0 shows some dark scenes down the mind of a crazy man and a cop who is more egoistic than his designation. But the plot is fragile and goes nowhere. The first half is all about Raman’s killings and his frantic obsession, those cat eyes and nocturnal habit of his gets you. The second half showing Raghav’s life and his “quality time” with Simmy and then the spiralling mystery. Surely, I wanted to see more of Nawazuddin in his character and that just cannot be denied.

This flick is no-no for chick who wants to be entertained. It takes you down the alley of crime and reality schticks to you. Truly saying, it is all about the performances that has made this worth it and takes you to next entertainment level.
