For the past 12 months that I have stayed in mumbai, I would keep roaming around exploring the city trying out as many thali restaurants as I could. Since I am southindian I kept looking for a proper South Indian meals joint and it took more than 2 months to find this wonderful place called A.Rama Nayak's Udupi Krishna Thali joint which is right next to Matunga Central station.
Although I do experiment a lot when it comes to food but I can't keep doing that everyday and wanted to settle for exactly the kind of place I eventually did.
And yes the place rocks!!!Let me give you some idea of what I have had the last time I went there.
Type of meals and prices of the same :
''Full meals'' for Rs.55/-
''Plate meals'' for 23/- without curd
and Rs.25/- with curd which is delicious especially if you plan to go there for lunch during summers-its the best coolant you could have!
Now let me explain the difference between Plate meals and full meals.
1)The sweet dish is complementary in case of full meals.
2)There are two more chutneys as well with full meals.
3)Everything is unlimited in case of full meals which is not the case with Plate meals.
4)Full meals are served on a plantain leaf.
Now what all did I have?
They served two hot chapatis, a bitter gourd and jaggery curry, a bottle gourd curry which is made by boiling the same in milk and then seasoning it with jeera, methi, coriander in fact the usual southie spices you use. You also get mango pickle made of raw mangoes absolutely sour and its made with freshly ground spices and is not preserved.
You also get buttermilk again seasoned with a little bit of spices and ''meetha neem'' which is so nice and is served every two minutes and believe me or not its wonderful to have it cold right after having walked in scorching sun for some ten minutes. I recommend this walk part of it!!
As an accompaniment to rice you get pepper rasam or kokam rasam and traditional southindian sambhar with drumsticks and all served steaming hot. Its quite an art having rasam rice without spilling it on to the table.
The waiters are very courteous and keep serving stuff every few minutes. You just have to look up and they are there without standing right next to you. So the hospitality is beyond question.
Then comes the dessert part. Now here you have three choices- you can either settle for fresh Mango juice or rasogullah or payasam. Since its the summer season, and so I might as well have as much of mango juice mango desserts as I can. I chose Mango juice which was very good too. All in all, its worth more than a visit and the food too is worth a lot more. One very good thing about this place is that the kitchen is all open for hygiene conscious people like me to have a look at and the tables are cleaned within a fraction of a second after you get up. The tables are kept clean and so are the thalis etc.
Even the plate meals are sufficient for any adult.
