I want to comment this on the basis of acting talent and not just the looks and/or charisma
1-Dilip Kumar:
''the thespian'', probably is the actor who is still liked and aped by all the budding actors. The Kumar is a living legend. Somehow, I have not seen his older movies. When is started seeing his movies, they were Shakti, Duniya, Vidhata, Kranti, mashaal, Saudagar. I think he was really great in Shakti, Vidhata and Mashaal. However in my opinion, Amitabh was not less than him in Shakti and expressed with his eyes more than his histrionics and matched him ably. Surprise package in that movie was great acting by Rakhee.
2-The Big B, amitabh bachchan:
Another living legend. He has countless movies to mention his acting capabilities. At one time no one could match his charisma. However I think acting wise, his earlier movies made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, like the evergreen Anand and Namak Haram were the best. Alaap was not mentioned much but was good. Frankly speaking his Manmohan desai movies did not demand much acting. I my opinion his latest flicks are the best as far his acting is concerned and he is doing much more variety now that ever before and now infact his is doing more justice to his status. I think his best is yet to come.
3-Sanjeev Kumar:
Many people might not even remeber him. But I think acting wise he was an insitution. He was so natural. He had no looks or height to match other heroes, but his acting was impeccable. The most hilarious movie ever made...Angoor was studded by his flawless acting...there are som many to mention.
4-Naseer ud din Shah:
Shah ji is a school of acting. Doing his tareef would be wasting time. I am afraid that we are wasting him when he is still alive.
5-Rishi Kapoor:
An underdog and much understated....i think he was very natural and on his day second to none. Only he was able to survive the supreme era of the bachchan. He was not only a very capable actor but matched it with his good looks and innocent eyes.
6-Amol Palekar:
Very few people know about him. I think he was a great great performer in all the Hriskhikesh mukherjee movies. I can still watch all those movies again and again.
7-Utpal Dutt:
IF some one want to watch sensible movies and great acting see Late U Dutt's movies. I think he was a great character. His movies made by Hrishikesh mukherjee still bring tears as well joy to me eyes.
8-Sunjay Dutt:
Many people will not agree with me and I think I am biased here. However I think he has done a lot of variety and his roles are very varied and he has never disappointed me as an actor. I will take any comments on this one.
9-Ashok Kumar:
He was a great actor and I think no one will argue with me on this one.
10-Kamal Hassan:
I think this list would not be complete without mentioning his name. Only problem is that I have not seen many of his regional movies and in hindi movies, he did not make a great mark.
There are several I am missing. However I thought the above were great due to their acting and due to their entertainment capabilities.
